Space Feedback!

  • Jun. 4th, 2016 at 9:52 PM
While the exchange was successful (everyone got a gift!), we'd still like to get input to make it even better next year. We-the-mods have discussed it amongst ourselves, and here's a list of things where we'd like your feedback, should you have any. Of course, we may have missed something, so feel free to tell us any other improvements you might want.
  • How was the stuff creation time (8 weeks)? How about the other time intervals?
  • What did you enjoy? What did you think could be improved?
  • Any feedback on the (final) sign-up sheet?
  • How do you feel about DW vs LJ? (We had two LJ mods and one DW mod, and almost all the questions came in via DW. Is there a reason for this fundamental imbalance?)
  • Would a franchise wrangling post pre-nominations be good so that large megafranchises could be chopped up into sensible fandoms, rather than some subfandoms and then All Media Types? (*cough* Star Wars *cough*)
  • Should ExtraPenguin, long-term horse icon user, use a picture of the horsehead nebula as hir Space Mod icon, rather than the current picture of Earth?
Love, the mod team.

I enjoyed the experience all around. And do not envy the project of chopping up the mega-fandoms (as one of the Star Wars writers).

Time worked great for me (no panic)

I'm DW only, but that's me.

And I think a nebula would be gorgeous.

Thank you all!

Would you be okay with a mostly fan-driven division drawing? I have no desire to arbitrate what subfandoms should happen, so I think I'd simply put up a post and then let all the franchise fans decide amongst themselves. Say, decide how they want the Star Wars tie-in material to be nommed so that people can use "Any" better.

And a nebula it shall be.

Oh I totally would love to see them separated. And maybe we can all get to some kind of agreement. But the Any is useful when so many bits overlap.

Thanks again.

*takes mod hat off*

I found the stuff creation time very plentiful, though then again I'm one of those people who finishes their Yuletide assignment in October. :P I think 6 weeks might be okay, though I'd like to hear from some artists and vidders on that.

Due to the Whoops Sign-up Form Incident, the sign-up time was stretched from 2 weeks to 3, which led to lots of people getting impatient and chomping on the bit, so to speak. All in all, the schedule was intentionally rather loose; I think a lot of it could be lopped off to shorten the run time by a few weeks (so that deadline is not at American University Exam Week week). [And also a longer Fandom Recruitment time. -edit]

I liked the fact that the exchange ran at all, and thanks to the lovely jiokra for picking up my pinch hit!

My fandoms were a bit obscure so I was unmatchable, but I think that's only fixable by increasing the participant count. (Also, maybe Space Yuletide wasn't the best idea ever.)

The final sign-up sheet was lovely and usable, though "Fanwok Type: Other" could have done with clarification.

I am a DW user who has never signed up for LJ, as y'all probably already know. Some of the imbalance might be due to all the PHs being posted here, but, uh, what is google group how do I make one so ANYWAY.

Franchise wrangling sounds good. I'm not in anything large enough to warrant franchise wrangling, but it'd help people signing up for Star Wars, frex, to help optimize their sign-up. (*mod hat on* Also, I'm guaranteed to forget how the Gundam Wing subfandomization should go. *mod hat off*)

And ExtraPenguin, long time horse icon user, should definitely use a picture of the horsehead nebula as hir Space Mod icon, rather than the current picture of Earth. The real debate is whether or not the horse's head should have a mod hat on, or perhaps even a text that reads "Mod", "Space Mod", or even "Spehs Mod".

Your suggestions will be taken into consideration.

Surprisingly enough, I agree with your thoughts on the schedule. Fandom recruitment should've been longer (a week?) and everything else was loose, though I'd rather have the built-in looseness and not need it than need it and not have it.

Pinch hitters are great
They save our modly bacons
Thank you pinch hitters

You are certainly allowed to request the obscure space fandoms of your heart. :)

Yeah, "Fanwork Type: Other" was a bit of a panicky catch-all; I think before next round there should be some talk about what categories other than fic, art, and vid people would like. (Though I wonder what a "Fanwok" would look like...)

ExtraPenguin, long time horse icon user, shall definitely investigate into pictures of the horsehead nebula. And appropriately modly hats, and perhaps even appropriately space-y fonts. Though perhaps not "Spehs Mod". It is vaguely funny to my currently sleep-deprived self, but I speculate I wouldn't find it funny at 9 am.

It was great for me, I both enjoyed the gift giving part and the reading my fic (it was wonderful). Maybe there was some initial confusion during the nomination process and the initial signup period? But that was fine, since everything got fixed and no harm was done. :p

- How was the stuff creation time (8 weeks)? How about the other time intervals?

I generally prefer long creation time, so 8 weeks was fine for me, but I'm OK if you need to make it shorter for reasons.

- What did you enjoy? What did you think could be improved?

I like that it allow vids, fanart and podfics as well as fics for primary gifts. Maybe spreadsheets and promoting a treating culture could improve the exchange popularity? I also vote for include gen and shippy pairings together with the character nominations (the same way the Tag Exchange and other gift exchanges do).

- Any feedback on the (final) sign-up sheet?

I think it was a good thing. I think it's very important to get matched to what we're signing up for, the reverse would just encourage more defaults and unhappiness all around: with bad matches creators could feel burdened with make something they hate and their gift for the recipient could be not so good because of it.

- How do you feel about DW vs LJ? (We had two LJ mods and one DW mod, and almost all the questions came in via DW. Is there a reason for this fundamental imbalance?)

I didn't know about the LJ mirror comm? If the DW comm gets more comments it could be because space swap started on DW? I think it's random anyway, if I'm correct for Rare Pare it's the reverse: the LJ mirror comm gets more traffic/comment/feedback than the one on DW.

- Would a franchise wrangling post pre-nominations be good so that large megafranchises could be chopped up into sensible fandoms, rather than some subfandoms and then All Media Types? (*cough* Star Wars *cough*)

It would make sense to ask participants' feedback right before the nomination period.

- Should ExtraPenguin, long-term horse icon user, use a picture of the horsehead nebula as hir Space Mod icon, rather than the current picture of Earth?

Are both nice choices.

Hm, what exactly do you envision when you say "spreadsheets"? A sortable spreadsheet with all requests?

We'll certainly take the "Relationship: A/B" "character" tags into consideration for next time. Perhaps even "Worldbuilding: Thing" if it'd be popular.

Yep, that's what I meant and for it to go with entries promoting treating. There were some people who didn't sign up that wondered if treats were allowed at all.

Thumbs up for "Worldbuilding: Thing", it totally intrigues me. :)

We'll see what we can do!

Hm, I'd have thought that the existence of a letters post and no "No Treating" signs would've clued everyone in that treats were allowed, but different exchange cultures, I guess. I'll add a line to the FAQ.

I'll give "Worldbuilding: Thing" a test run on the The Goblin Emperor exchange I'll run in autumn and report back. :)

One vote for the Horsehead Nebula!

(And this really did seem to go well; my pinch hitting skills were not needed. :-) )

The "only matching on requested character," or making it clear that matching would take place at fandom level (which is something I would be fine with!), should have been sorted out way sooner, and questions about how the exchange should run should be on official communities first before/instead of branching out to unofficial ones.

I don't know if this is the kind of feedback that's helpful in terms of "the final signup sheet," but I wish there had been more subdivision even for non-mega fandoms like Madeleine L'Engle's books. Meg (a character from the Murry-O'Keefe series), as well as Adam and Vicky (characters from the Austin series) were all nominated. There were three requests for Meg as an individual, and (at least in the last hour before updates, maybe there was one at the end) zero offers for the fandom, where you had to offer at least two characters or "any." I couldn't offer that fandom because I could have written for Meg alone, but not for the other two, in part because she doesn't appear in their books (although I'm not sure how space-relevant those would have been on their own so I guess there are pros and cons either way). I don't mind how my matching turned out at all, but there might be more room to divide small fandoms if that makes matching easier.

I'm a dreamwidth-only user, but I'd happily follow LiveJournal instead if that was where the action was concentrated (this is what I do for Yuletide, for instance). Do whatever works for you.

We mods don't know everything, so subdivisions of fandoms are generally up to the participants. In the example you give, perhaps you could've brought the issue up on the Nominations Clarification post?

I, too, am a DreamWidth-only user. The issue is more the other two mods being left to twiddle their thumbs. :P

Yeah, I guess I just didn't think about that fandom's issue until it was too late. If I'm involved in the future I'll try to be more proactive! (I had an awesome time with the fics I wrote and received, just not sure if I'll be as interested in spacey fandoms this time next year.)

Dunno what to do about crossposting imbalance, sorry.

Thanks for modding! :)
