[sticky entry] Sticky: Welcome to Space Swap!

Space Swap is a multimedia exchange for fandoms of all sorts (books to RPF to music videos to etc.). The one criterion for inclusion is that the fandom be related to SPACE.

We'll be running this along typical exchange lines: participants will sign up with requests and offers, will be matched via AO3, and will receive an assignment. By signing up, participants agree to make a fannish creation for their assigned participant. In turn, someone will make a fannish creation for them. You will need an AO3 account to participate.

We'll kick off the swap with a fandom recruitment phase in which everyone can wax poetic about their favourite space fandoms in the hopes of recruiting new fans. Following that we’ll hold nominations to get a set of fandoms for our swap, and then we’ll have sign-ups and be off and running!
Note on treats: They are very welcome, and don't have to to fulfil the minimum creation requirements that main gifts do.

Dear Spacer

collection | letters post | tag set

This is where you can post your Dear Spacer letter!

As we all know, it's not all that hard to exceed the space for prompts that AO3 gives us. Some of us (looks guiltily at self) also really like writing letters. And hey, who doesn't want to write a letter with the title Dear Spacer? Link your letter in the comments!

For consistent formatting, let's use this as the base of our comments:

AO3 name:
(Fandom 1): Tag A, Tag B
(Fandom 2): Tag C
(Fandom 3): Tag D, Tag E, Tag F, Tag G

(expand as necessary)
Entry tags:

How to sign up.

Sign-ups are open! First, I suggest going through the tag set, thinking about what you would like to receive or create.

For at least 3 fandoms (and at most 8):
  1. Pick the fandom.
  2. Choose 1 to 15 tags you'd like to receive. Bear in mind that you will only match on one of these, so don't try to set up combinations.
  3. Choose which media type(s) you'd like for the gift to be in – fic, art, vid, or pod format. (This can be different for each fandom.)

Fandoms must be unique.

Prompts are useful for giving your assigned creator somewhere to start from. We recommend writing prompts for each type of fanwork you requested, either into the box provided by AO3, or into a linked "Dear Spacer" letter.

For at least 3 fandoms (and at most 10):
  1. Pick the fandom.
  2. Choose 2 to 20 tags you'd be willing to create a gift in. If the fandom only has 1 tag, or you're truly happy with creating something about any of the tags in the tagset, choose "Any". As with offers, please remember that you will only match on one tag.
  3. Choose which media type(s) you'd be willing to create in – fic, art, vid, or pod format. (This can be different for each fandom.)

Fandoms must be unique.

The final tag set.

Now is the time for looking through the tag set, planning one's requests and offers, and doing tag set cleanup – tell us of any duplicates, spelling mistakes, tags under the wrong fandoms, tags that AO3 forgot to add "Character: " to, etc.

One obvious issue: Where does Character: Proto-Zero belong?

This is also the place for inquiring after additional media types for fanwork type matching. If you want to make or request something beyond art/fic/podfic/vid, drop a comment here.

Nominations close soon!

Nominations are closing in 1 hour and 45 minutes, at 17:00 GMT. Please do any edits to your noms before then.

Nominations clarification

Please read the nominations instructions.

As usual, if you spot tag duplications, typos, or anything in the wrong place, tell us. Nominations end on Friday. (Approximately 43 hours left.)

Tag rewording requests

Star Trek: The Next Generation: Worldbuilding: Kirk-era history (TNG) – as stated in the previous post, this is unclear. Do you want history education, conceptions of history, or what?

Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008) - All Media Types: Worldbuilding: Clone bar – please reword, I don't know what you're asking for.

The Chronicles of Riddick Series: Worldbuilding: Riddick keeps Jack with him after leaving the desert planet – this is more of an AU, which is unfortunately outside of the scope of our exchange.

Do these contain space?

Gargoyles (TV)
Transformers (Bay Movies)
ワンパンマン | One-Punch Man

Please read the instructions

Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens (2015) Jessika Pava
The Martian (2015) Beth Johanssen, Mark Wattney
...please read the nominations instructions

Nominations clarification

Read the nominations instructions.

I've separated the noms questions into regular questions, and "please read the instructions" reminders.

Star Trek: The Next Generation: Worldbuilding: Kirk-era history (TNG)
This is a bit unclear; as-is, I'd read this as "what happened during TOS?" If you're looking for history education or public perceptions of or whatever, please reword.

Final Fantasy IV
Does this contain space? Google keeps giving me results on hard drive space, which is not what I meant.

People nominating Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger, Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon (1992 anime), and Transformers (Bay Movies): please note that we will only be matching on ONE tag. If you request multiple single characters, you will only guarantee a gift with one of those characters. If you want to request a gift that focuses on the interaction of two or more characters, please edit your nominations to be Relationship: A/B.

People nominating:
Star Trek: Alternate Original Series (Movies) Christopher Pike, James T. Kirk, Khan Noonien Singh (Star Trek - All Media Types), Leonard "Bones" McCoy, Spock (Star Trek)
Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens (2015) Jessika Pava
The Martian (2015) Mark Watney, Beth Johanssen
Star Ocean: Till the End of Time Albel Nox, Cliff Fittir, Fayt Leingod
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann Adiane (Gurren Lagann), Kamina (Gurren Lagann), Nia Teppelin, Simon (Gurren Lagann), Viral (Gurren Lagann), Yoko Littner

...please read the nominations instructions.

Nominations reminder

Obey the nominations instructions or your noms won't be approved. See also our previous nominations clarification post for things that still need your input!

So, the nominator(s) of:

Marvel Cinematic Universe

Transformers (IDW Generation One)
Megatron (Transformers), Perceptor (Transformers), Ratchet (Transformers), Rewind (Transformers), Rung (Transformers), Shockwave (Transformers), Springer (Transformers), Ultra Magnus, Whirl (Transformers)

...please read the manual. If you truly wish to nom all those characters separately (and receive something that centers on one and only one of them), prefix Character: to the tag. If you wish to receive a relationship between two or more of them, type Relationship: A/B or Relationship: A & B in the slot. If you wish to receive worldbuilding, type Worldbuilding: Thing in the slot.

Nominations clarification

Reminder: You are allowed to nominate relationships and worldbuilding tags! The slot is called "Characters", but that's just due to AO3 limitations. Read the nominations instructions for further information.

Also, AO3 has eaten the fandom associated with Worldbuilding: Alaya-Vijnana System. Where should it go?

ETA: Person/people nominating
Star Trek: Enterprise
Worldbuilding: Male Andorian/Male Vulcan Relationship
Worldbuilding: Male Vulcan/Male Vulcan Relationship

Star Wars Original Trilogy
Worldbuilding: Male-looking Droid/Male Human Relationship

Do you want a thing explaining the worldbuilding implications of, say, Vulcan homosexuality (Worldbuilding: Vulcan Male Homosexuality) or a thing focused on the relationship between two Vulcans (Relationship: Male Vulcan/Male Vulcan)? Please edit your noms to be clearer.

And: Person nominating Chronicles of Riddick, please read the nominations instructions. DO NOT USE CANONICALS. Please edit your nominations to comply with the instructions.

Nominations Instructions

Noms are open!

Tags that do not conform to these instructions will not be approved.

Please disregard everything AO3 says on the "nominate" page. Do NOT choose the canonical versions of whatever tag you're nominating. Tags are NOT restricted to characters only. Thank you. (AO3 doesn't let mods adjust what's on the nominations page.) If you have questions, please ask!

Please check what was agreed for your fandom on the franchise wrangling post. Write the fandom's name based on what was decided there. If your fandom has not been discussed on the franchise wrangling post, use the AO3 canonical. Please avoid using "- All Media Types" tags. If you're nominating a character who's found in many canons, or a relationship with such a character, please add the fandom name in (brackets) after the name(s).

Franchise Wrangling

Or: how do you want to subcategorize large franchises?

All Media Types? Into subfandoms? By time period? By location?

Make a thread for your canon (unless there is one already), and then argue out in the subcomments.

The end result of the threads on the 17th at 17:00 GMT (when nominations open) will be used to decide how nominations are approved.

Fandom recruitment post

Apologies for the delay, some rather unexpected travel happened to me. (I'm safe and sound on the way home now!)

Anyway, here's the fandom pimping post. Tell us why your canon is the best! Here's a nice format you can use to make it easier for people to find stuff: (copypasteable below)

The canon: The canon's name
What: The medium – TV, book, anime, RPF, 5-minute (posters/music video/etc), ... – some idea of the length would also be good, is it one book/season/movie, or is it longer?
Where: where it can be found – is there a legal free download, is it on Netflix, an Amazon link, etc
Quick pitch: Give us a brief tagline! "Sentient ants get a space program", "Space Opera detectives chasing a priceless alien artwork", "Gritty asteroid mining RPG", ...
In-depth: Tell us all the reasons why it's awesome! (If you don't know where to start: Some indication on subgenre, outlook on the universe, scale of the plot, personality of the main characters, your favorite feature, or some interesting worldbuilding detail.)

Now, go forth and advertise and read the most space-y recs list this side of the galactic core!

Rules update, more stuff

Consensus seems to be that we'll be going forward with character-relationship-worldbuilding tag matching and allowing original works, as detailed in the previous post, but we'll only lock things in at the end of the month, so please contribute! (We also made the dates more America-friendly. The exchange gets going in February.)

One question, however, didn't get any attention, so I'm reposting it:

How many fanwork types? We'll have fanfic and fanart, and perhaps fanvid and podfic, but is there anything else you would like to request or make? How should multimedia stuff be counted?
That is, we will have fanfic and fanart as requestable fanwork types. Should we have anything else? Fanvid? Podfic? (Where podfic would be either podfic an extant 1k+ fic that fits the specifications, or write and then pod a 500+ word original fic that fits the specifications.) Should we have meta as its own category?

Also, somewhat relatedly, what are your opinions on the minimum creation requirements? Ficwise, we'll keep it at 1k; do you feel that the other mediums' requirements are equivalent?

Space Feedback!

While the exchange was successful (everyone got a gift!), we'd still like to get input to make it even better next year. We-the-mods have discussed it amongst ourselves, and here's a list of things where we'd like your feedback, should you have any. Of course, we may have missed something, so feel free to tell us any other improvements you might want.
  • How was the stuff creation time (8 weeks)? How about the other time intervals?
  • What did you enjoy? What did you think could be improved?
  • Any feedback on the (final) sign-up sheet?
  • How do you feel about DW vs LJ? (We had two LJ mods and one DW mod, and almost all the questions came in via DW. Is there a reason for this fundamental imbalance?)
  • Would a franchise wrangling post pre-nominations be good so that large megafranchises could be chopped up into sensible fandoms, rather than some subfandoms and then All Media Types? (*cough* Star Wars *cough*)
  • Should ExtraPenguin, long-term horse icon user, use a picture of the horsehead nebula as hir Space Mod icon, rather than the current picture of Earth?
Love, the mod team.
