The Wanderers - Meg Howrey
Relationship: Helen Kane & Yoshihiro Tanaka & Sergei Kuznetsov (Wanderers), Fanfiction, Interactive Fiction

I love these astronauts with their exquisite self-control, their expertise at filling out evaluative questionnaires, their ability to maintain equanimity in the face of certain kinds of stress (imminent and unrelenting danger, long stints in small spaces, close quarters with the same two other human beings, waiting, waiting, waiting). They're extremely methodical in their work, their behavior, their thoughts. Nothing matters to any of them as much as showing that they're the best team to be sent into space because nothing matters so much to them as being in space. You can call them exemplary, unusual, strange. I enjoy spending time with them to the extent of skipping over all the chapters with the other characters on reread.

And I'm fascinated by the subtlety of the situation they're in--aware that they're constantly being watched, monitored, evaluated; constantly self-monitoring; constantly asking themselves whether Eidolon feels like a simulation or like the real thing...and I really love the uncertainty...I want it to be possible that it is the real thing but also might not be.

I want more of them! Show me a day in training or simulation that we didn't get to see. Let them gather together post-canon. Maybe they go to Mars. (What do they feel?) Or do some canon divergence in which Eidolon goes differently. Throw them into some new and maybe more science-fictional situation in which they can be them together and demonstrate their competence and cooperation and preoccupation with being far away from all other people, possibly in microgravity.

If you do want to play with the theme of the real versus the simulation, at the physical level and at the behavioral level, I'm very open to something that gets weird or meta. And if you're interested in making interactive fiction, I'd love it to be similar to a traditional narrative, but with choices that affect the plot. But I'd be equally interested in its pushing the weirdness and meta envelope. I'm fine with accessing various formats (HTML, TWINE, etc.)

You can find general likes in my letter.

Concern with resolving danger in an emergency situation is fine, but not dwelling on the possibility of dying/having intrusive thoughts about either topic)

Futurama
Character: Zapp Brannigan (Futurama), Fanfiction

The tragedy of Zapp Brannigan! This poor man, who clearly has none of the attributes that would allow him to excel and thrive at his job, and yet has somehow come to occupy this role. He also clearly wants so very much to be the man he's supposed to be, maybe both the ridiculous trope version and the competent captain version. Usually I love the actual hypercompetents, but there's something about Brannigan's situation and the way he lives it--pretending at overconfidence, and then suddenly, helplessly vulnerable--that moves me. I think it's partly the meta-ness of it. Here he is in a very knowing canon satirizing a pop-cultural misrepresentation of a character/type. I'm not sure that he could choose something else even if he tried; I think the trope might push him right back into it. (How would he find agency in that situation?) I love that he has no pants. I love that he recognizes how badly he's in over his head, and still tries. I genuinely wish him well, even as I know how hard he is for the other characters who have to deal with him.

I'd like something that takes Brannigan seriously and sympathetically, that asks what it would be like to be him. If it's got tragedy and pathos, that would be amazing. If it's also funny, I would be so impressed. It's okay if that humor is somewhat at his expense, as long as it's kind to him. Feel free to play with the meta and the knowingness and get weird with it, if inspiration takes you that way.

You can find general likes in my letter.

Stargate Atlantis
Relationship: Rodney McKay/John Sheppard (SGA), Relationship: Rodney McKay & John Sheppard (SGA), Fanvid

John and Rodney are very dear to me, and while I know that there are many McShep vids out there...I'm greedy, I want one for me! Something full of my likes. Something that harnesses the gorgeous power of current-day vidding tools while being unapologetically oldschool (which for me means probably a songvid, whether it constructs a story or retells canon events).

Things I would love, in no particular order, not all of which might go together:

- John's loneliness (John is my blorbo)
- Flying; flying in space, flying in atmosphere, flying underwater
- Shep whump
- Melancholy and yearning (say, a sense of alienation, wistfulness, or I'm up for something straight up sad as long as it's not grief/mourning for one of them: maybe the past, unrequited feelings, or repression resolved or not resolved, or fights or a friendship in trouble)
- Or painful joy? Overwhelming joy?
- Distance and intimacy
- Togetherness/fittingness
- Juxtapositions
- Indulging in gorgeous shots (lighting, scenery, Atlantis, space)
- Indulging in both characters' gorgeousness (and if it's that kind of vid, showing them appreciating each other's bodies)
- Team! Ronon & Teyla & Rodney & John; team being there for each other
- Reaction shots full of feeling (that may or may not have been contextually about each other in the original)
- Humor
- John Sheppard making faces
- Music that has (or develops) momentum, images that build up
- A moment of quiet at the end
- John touching Rodney (I mean, vice versa too...)
- The pleasure of each other's company (sidelong glances, looking at each other a lot in general, grins, coordinated movements, hanging out together, teasing and playing, getting up to unwise things together)
- Thinking too much about each other (whether that's worry or preoccupation or ?)
- Saving (or trying to save) each other
- John the soldier
- Rodney the brave
- Feelings, so many feelings

You can find general and music and vid likes in my letter.

Crossover Fandom
Character: Ellie Arroway (Contact) in Stargate Atlantis, Fanart, Fanfiction

I root so hard for Dr. Ellie Arroway pursuing bigger and bigger antennas and listening so intently to make that connection with someone/something out there, to find that meaning that everyone in the movie is looking for. I love how intelligent, even-handed, open-mindedly searching this whole movie is, how competent the characters are and how real they feel, and also how beautifully it is made, from the big outdoors vistas to the science-ing (I'm so impressed with how it managed to make a high-tension action scene out of some astronomers moving computers and audio equipment in order to listen to a radio signal) to the science-fiction-y machine itself. (The use of sound and silence in it worked so well with Ellie's passion, and the romance of listening and radio--and SETI, but also the noise of all the talking and ideas we throw at each other.) It's a science fiction movie that's about us and what we are and what we're looking for, that long-shot chance of maybe finding something transcendental, and how good it is to search for it.

I think it'd be fitting for her to find out about the Stargate Program--I considered nominating it as general Stargate rather than SGA, but thought specific would be preferred, and if I had to choose, I think it'd be especially lovely for her to go to Atlantis. After all, she was willing, more than willing, to climb into this tech they had little real understanding of, constructed following instructions sent to them by aliens they knew nothing about, for the chance to do whatever it was they intended her to do. Plus, there's something about those moments under the stars and the big telescopes, listening, that fits, mood-wise for me with the city of spires and balconies, floating on a sea that often seems to have clear skies for stargazing. That, and SGA is my favorite, the "just right" that caught my imagination and my love.

I'm fine with whatever amount of fusion or crossover massaging to make it work, from changing details of what is publicly disclosed to shifting timelines or even parallel universes.

DNWs:
current-world politics and events unless in-canon, stories focused on natural disaster or apocalypse, genocide, social and civil unrest, epidemics; hopeless dystopias; financial troubles; abuse in character backstories; vehicular accidents involving real-world civilian vehicles; nuclear explosions and radiation sickness; burns (including hot fluid and chemical; first-degree is fine), charred/on fire bodies/body parts alive or dead (food is fine, just not people as defined in the fic's world); pregnancy, childbirth, and related complications, parent-child relationships/issues and childrearing as major themes; de-aging; intergenerational incest within living memory; explicit underage sex; non-canonical major character death (except regeneration and fantastical/sci-fi resurrections or transmutations); major illness (except for curable science-fictional/fantastical ones); deaths of grandparents, parents, aunts/uncles, cousins; funerary rites and objects, widow narratives (in which the plot of the story is about someone losing their partner and mourning and having to adapt); the negative 'ugh'; the word 'gross' alone to describe non-physical behavior; the term 'AR-1'; the word 'daddy' in any context; AUs besides those requested and canon divergence; characters who must be taken care of to the extent of losing agency; weddings (aliens made them go through a ritual while on a mission ok); readerfic; accidental discharge of chemical projectile weapon; decapitation; description of corpses

Smut-specific DNWs: cannibalism (canonical carnivory/Wraith or vampire feeding okay); necrophilia; ageplay, parental terms in sexual contexts, ABDL; the word 'titty' (variants ok); penis-nipple penetration; penetration of anything in the head besides the mouth; breeding kink; noncon; detailed description of fecal matter; insertion of long fingernails (claws okay)

Art-specific DNWs: skulls and skeletons/memento mori (timepieces ok), melting or bursting faces, bugged-out eyes (especially in screaming faces) and eyeballs out of sockets, lips pulled back far enough that teeth and gums are sticking out, facial trauma beyond what you can fake on a live actor with regular makeup and stage blood—basically anything that reminds me that what’s in there providing the structure is a skull and meat and gristle; protrusions and extrusions growing from the body where they shouldn't be (teeth or spikes all over face or extra hands all over the body or cilia everywhere), matrices of shiny keloid scars (marks and single-lined scars are more than okay), clumpy matter such as fungi or infections (like trypophobia but jutting outwards instead of holes); bugs in groups (single butterfly okay, swarm of bees not); disordered organic growths; decay; skin illnesses; zombies; eyesore palette, candycore, clown makeup, mushroom clouds, malformation body horror; ropey gore

Earth Star Voyager (1988)
Character: Jake Brown (Earth Star Voyager), Fanfiction

I'm weak for the story of how Jake Brown lost his ship to the mutiny and then managed to survive for six years on his own on Blue Star Gamma, and yet coming out of it found this gift of something he could devote himself to, people who he could believe in and who needed him and had a place for him, and on his way not just a second chance but a chance to face what had happened to him (and however he handled or didn't handle it). I enjoy the subtle moments of his reactions as the mutiny story gradually comes out, the way he says, "oh, anybody can get beaten" under his breath on the World's Fair satellite, and I really enjoy how physically resourceful he is, in a brainy way, and how he takes that to the extreme of holding together his railgun with his own body so that Jonathan Earth Star Voyager can fight off the Vanguard Explorer (and the way they do it on the show is just about right for me--we see it's whumpy through the acting but there are no visible burns). I do see Jake/Jonathan (or Jake/Jonathan/Sally works for me too) as a part of that, but I'd be as willing to just read about Jake and how he comes to be that person, how he experiences it, what he does going forward.

DNWs:
current-world politics and events unless in-canon, stories focused on natural disaster or apocalypse (Earth's canonical environmental conditions fine as partial setting, but please don't make the story about that), genocide, social and civil unrest (no rioting, demonstrations), epidemics; hopeless dystopias; financial troubles (things like Beanie overdrawing his account out of kid negligence fine); abuse in requested character backstories; vehicular accidents involving real-world civilian vehicles; nuclear explosions and radiation sickness; burns (including hot fluid and chemical; first-degree is fine), charred/on fire bodies/body parts alive or dead (food is fine, just not people as defined in the fic's world); pregnancy, childbirth, and related complications, parent-child relationships/issues and childrearing as major themes; de-aging; intergenerational incest within living memory; explicit underage sex; deathbed scenes; major illness (except for curable science-fictional/fantastical ones); deaths of grandparents, parents, aunts/uncles, cousins (fine if character doesn't have them for unspecified reasons); funerary rites and objects, widow narratives (in which the plot of the story is about someone losing their partner and mourning and having to adapt); the negative 'ugh'; the word 'gross' alone to describe non-physical behavior; the word 'daddy' in any context; AUs except canon divergence; characters who must be taken care of to the extent of losing agency; weddings (aliens made them go through a ritual while on a mission ok; privately making things official ok; offscreen getting married ok); readerfic; accidental discharge of chemical projectile weapon; civilian bystanders getting shot with chemical projectile weapons; decapitation; description of corpses

The Last Starfighter (1984)
Character: Beta (Last Starfighter), Fanfiction

What is it like to be a Beta Unit? Does becoming someone change the way a Beta Unit thinks and feels? What is that process like? Are they normally meant to be reusable? Are there other Beta Units, and are they production-line identical? In the movie, Beta seems to both become Alex-like (but imperfectly, with a lot of gaps) and retain some personality traits of his (its?) very own. Beta seems to be reasonably comfortable with who he is and what his purpose is, while at the same time is sardonic about it—how much of that came with the original programming, and how much of that did he pick up from Alex? I’d be fascinated to read about a Beta Unit who is really not that human-like at all, inside, in thinking patterns and needs and motivations, but who temporarily experiences some of it in order to mimic Alex. If you’d like to write a story in which he actually survives his big heroic act, that would be great too! For DNW purposes, please skip past the truck crash and immolation itself, and if there’s any physical aftermath, make it sci-fi robot self-repair (whether circuit-type internal components or gooey or both) that in no way resembles human burn trauma. Or you don’t have to address it at all, just pick up afterwards with Beta perfectly fine or write about before that happens.

DNWs:
- current-world politics and events unless in-canon; stories focused on natural disaster or apocalypse, genocide, mass social and civil unrest, epidemics; "crapsack world" dystopias; abuse in requested character backstories
- Beta Units against being Beta Units or psychologically harmed by being Beta Units; a “Hermione saving the house-elves” or Beta revolution story
- vehicular accidents involving current-world civilian vehicles (historical, sci-fi ok); nuclear explosions and radiation sickness; burns (including hot fluid and chemical; first-degree is fine), charred/on fire bodies/body parts alive or dead (food is fine, just not people as defined in the fic's world); out-of-control fires or aftermath (things like campfires ok); ashes; description of accidental heat damage or being trapped with damaging heat; accidental discharge of chemical projectile weapon; decapitation
- pregnancy, childbirth, and related complications; parent-child relationships/issues and childrearing as major themes; intergenerational incest within living memory
- de-aging; explicit underage sex
- major character death (except fantastical/sci-fi resurrections or transmutations); major illness (except for curable science-fictional/fantastical ones); deaths of grandparents, parents, siblings, aunts/uncles, cousins; funerary rites and objects; description of corpses; widow narratives (plot about someone losing their partner and mourning and having to adapt)
- the negative 'ugh'; the words 'gross' or 'yuck' to describe non-physical behavior; the words 'daddy'/'mommy' in any context
- AUs besides canon divergence; characters who must be taken care of to the extent of losing agency; intragroup bullying/social status jostling/scheming (Carrie, Mean Girls, office politics, PTA power struggle trope)
- weddings (aliens made them go through a ritual ok)
- readerfic
- explicit sex

Andor (TV)
Relationship: Perrin Fertha / Tay Kolma / Mon Mothma (Andor), Fanart, Fanfiction

I'd like these people to be miserable in their unspeaking, unspeakable, repressed way, whether they're trying to make it work or allowing themselves to make everything that much worse. One thing that's important to me is that no one person or factor is entirely to blame for the misery and no one is the blameless victim of it--I'd like them all to contribute to and take some personal responsibility for it. I'd like for them all to have some sympathy from the narrative. It could be partly the situation, the being trapped. But just partly. It's possible that they think they're doing the right thing, or think (or are) trying their best, or sometimes they can indulge in or get stuck in a rut of bad behavior. That said, for this request, I'm not looking for a story about deliberate sustained pettiness or manipulating a non-requested party to turn them against someone. I'd like the bad to be balanced by some good.

I love the sense of alienation of these expatriate Chandrilans. Gorgeous outfits, elegant spaces and glittering but careful parties, the money and diplomacy, fancy school ties, the cultural ties that connect them while in this foreign/alien place, those deeply repressed, unspoken unhappinesses, all with stakes so high that the pressure is immense.

Alternatively, maybe you'd prefer to write about some time in their lives during which it's possible for them not to be unhappy. If so, I'd be interested in something that has a flavor of maybe narratively premonitory melancholy or yearning. Something sad because it knows it will become sad, that difficulty is coming. Or that remembers unhappiness with regret.

I'm fine with a v or threesome or some kind of third wheel thing; whatever works. I've seen the original trilogy and Andor, but don't mind spoilers at all for anything else--this note is just here to let you know I probably won't know the wider context. I'd prefer something light on lore (even light on the other storylines of Andor), but I understand that their stories are woven into a bigger story, and I've skimmed some summaries for the sake of understanding these characters.

DNWs:
- current-world politics and events unless in-canon; stories focused on natural disaster or apocalypse, genocide, mass social and civil unrest events, epidemics; "crapsack world" dystopias; abuse in requested character backstories
- vehicular accidents involving real-world vehicles; nuclear explosions and radiation sickness; burns (including hot fluid and chemical; first-degree is fine), charred/on fire bodies/body parts alive or dead (food is fine, just not people as defined in the fic's world); out-of-control fires or aftermath (things like campfires ok); ashes; description of accidental heat damage or being trapped with damaging heat; accidental discharge of chemical projectile weapon; decapitation
- pregnancy, childbirth, and related complications; parent-child relationships/issues and childrearing as major themes (Leida can exist but offscreen and not talked about during sex); intergenerational incest within living memory
- de-aging; explicit underage sex
- major character death (except fantastical/sci-fi resurrections or transmutations); major illness (except for curable science-fictional/fantastical ones); deaths of grandparents, parents, siblings, aunts/uncles, cousins; funerary rites and objects; description of corpses; widow narratives (plot about someone losing their partner and mourning and having to adapt)

R is for Rocket - Ray Bradbury
Character: Trent (RR), Relationship: C. M. Christopher & Ralph Priory (RR), Relationship: C. M. Christopher/Ralph Priory (RR), Character: C. M. Christopher (RR), Fanfiction

Somehow, this story is both wonderful and so good as it is and makes me interested in a glimpse of life post-canon, during astronaut training and after. I love Christopher’s idealism, his poetic space-age passion for the rockets, for becoming one of those astronauts who ride them, and I love the boyish yearning, the almost but not quite broachable distance between him and an adult world of accomplishment and contribution and competence and striving. I love the fact that it’s a calling…and he’s clearly being called, but he can’t ask for it, he has to be chosen. I love that he loves it more than anything, and more than any of the other boys do, I love his need for it. And then, and then…he’s chosen. The powers that be see it, and the system gets rolling, and the knock on the door comes. I hope, as Christopher does, that Ralph will make it there, that they’ll be there together. Because that’s the other part of this story that I found really compelling, their friendship, relationship, their closeness and shared hopes and dreams. Please show me what it’s like to go off to all those years of training, or maybe the payoff when trainees finally graduate and become fully-qualified astronauts, or what it’s like to be someone who’s already there, has already lived it, and who works to recruit and train the next cohort. I’d like to see that dreamed-of, hoped-for, long-craved world and the lives of those who make it there, through diligence and discipline (and inherent suitability), achieving the realization of their undeniable need and love.

Archer: 1999
Character: Archer MVS
Fanfiction
For this request, I would like single-character focus more than ships, though it's fine to include Archer’s relationships with other characters as part of the story to the extent that canon does. I am especially fond of the Cheryl of this AU, and if you’d like to include her in Archer’s story, you could expand beyond canon on their...friendship or camaraderie or appreciation of each other's commitments to their own ids or whatever it is that brings them together.

I’m happy for season 10 to be treated as a standalone story set in the space AU that ignores the rest of canon, or to leak in influences or references from the rest, though I’d still like this to mostly be an Archer 1999 story (it is space swap after all!) I love it for what it is. It's so inventive and a loving homage of its +/-70s? sci-fi inspirations, and it's gorgeous.

Archer: Let me indulge in Archer's fantasy of being a space (co-)captain, from the aesthetic (gorgeous uniform!), to the yearning for space-opera heroism, to that time he gets knocked against a bulkhead. I love Archer whump, I love Archer competence, I love his hedonistic himself-ness layered over deep vulnerability.

Cheryl: I loved that she was the hotshot pilot, competent for once, but bored out of her mind and filled with the same "you're not my supervisor" attitude as ever. I also love the unapologetic kinkiness of Cheryl.

DNWs:
- current-world politics and events unless in-canon,
- stories focused on natural disaster or apocalypse, genocide, social and civil unrest, epidemics;
- hopeless, inescapable dystopias
- non-canonical or focus on abuse in requested character backstories
- vehicular accidents involving real-world vehicles
