Welcome to Space Swap!

  • Feb. 6th, 2016 at 12:42 PM
Space Swap is a multimedia exchange for fandoms of all sorts (books to RPF to music videos to etc.). The one criterion for inclusion is that the fandom be related to SPACE.

We'll be running this along typical exchange lines: participants will sign up with requests and offers, will be matched via AO3, and will receive an assignment. By signing up, participants agree to make a fannish creation for their assigned participant. In turn, someone will make a fannish creation for them. You will need an AO3 account to participate.

We'll kick off the swap with a fandom recruitment phase in which everyone can wax poetic about their favourite space fandoms in the hopes of recruiting new fans. Following that we’ll hold nominations to get a set of fandoms for our swap, and then we’ll have sign-ups and be off and running!
Note on treats: They are very welcome, and don't have to to fulfil the minimum creation requirements that main gifts do.

Letters post!

  • Feb. 10th, 2019 at 6:38 PM
collection | letters post | tag set

This is where you can post your Dear Spacer letter!

As you might know, it's possible to exceed the space for prompts that AO3 gives us. Some of us also really like writing letters. And hey, who doesn't want to write a letter with the title Dear Spacer? Link your letter in the comments!

For consistent formatting, let's use this as the base of our comments:

AO3 name:
Letter:
(Fandom 1):
Tag A, Tag B

(Fandom 2):
Tag C

(Fandom 3):
Tag D, Tag E, Tag F, Tag G

(expand as necessary)

Sign-ups are open!

  • Feb. 8th, 2019 at 7:00 PM
Sign-ups are open! First, we suggest going through the tag set, thinking about what you would like to receive or create.

Requests

For at least 3 fandoms (and at most 8):
  1. Pick the fandom.
  2. Choose 1 to 15 tags you'd like to receive. Bear in mind that you will only match on one of these, so don't try to set up combinations.
  3. Choose which media type(s) you'd like for the gift to be in – fic, art, vid, or pod format. (This can be different for each fandom.)

Fandoms must be unique.

Prompts are useful for giving your assigned creator somewhere to start from. We recommend writing prompts for each type of fanwork you requested, either into the box provided by AO3, or into a linked "Dear Spacer" letter. If you have Do Not Wants that would ruin a gift for you, please list them in the text field of the sign-up.

If you are given a gift that contains a DNW listed in your sign-up, you are eligible for a replacement. Gifts will be randomly spot-checked as they come in and dealt with if necessary, but should a DNW-containing gift make its way to you, please contact the mod.

Offers

For at least 3 fandoms (and at most 10):
  1. Pick the fandom.
  2. Choose 2 to 20 tags you'd be willing to create a gift in. If the fandom only has 1 tag, or you're truly happy with creating something about any of the tags in the tagset, choose "Any". As with offers, please remember that you will only match on one tag.
  3. Choose which media type(s) you'd be willing to create in – fic, art, vid, or pod format. (This can be different for each fandom.)

Fandoms must be unique.

Seeking fandoms for two lost tags

  • Feb. 5th, 2019 at 10:03 PM
We still have two unassociated tags – where do they go?

Worldbuilding: Demons
Worldbuilding: The Flood

Nominations over!

  • Feb. 3rd, 2019 at 6:59 PM
Nominations have now closed! People affected by the final nominations clarification post have 24 hours to be in contact.

Sign-ups will start on Friday at 19:00 EET! In the meanwhile, please look through the tag set to see if your fandoms have any duplicated relationship tags, or other issues. 6 tags from Doom and Halo seem to have lost their homes; I will fix them tomorrow.

Nominations Clarification #4

  • Feb. 3rd, 2019 at 11:48 AM
Only a bit over 7h left to nominate!

Read the instructions

Nominator(s) of
  • Dragonriders of Pern - Anne McCaffrey
  • Interstellar Pig (Book)
  • Marathon (Video Games)
  • Portal (Video Game)
  • The Tripods - John Christopher
Please read the nominations instructions and edit your nominations to match. Otherwise, they will be rejected.

Does this fandom have space?

There are some fandoms where the Wikipedia article is at the very boundary of "is this space" to this sleep-fuzzy mod – could someone please explain a bit more?
Ai no Kusabi
Salvation (TV)

Could this fandom be merged?

Nominator(s) of Marvel Cinematic Universe and Marvel (Comics) – we have lots of Marvel titles in the tagset; if your requests could go under one of those (Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, etc), then I'd appreciate it if you could place them there.

Final 24h of nominations!

  • Feb. 2nd, 2019 at 7:03 PM
We're now in the final 24h of nominations! Get in those last-minute noms. Noms end 3 Feb 19:00 EET in your timezone | countdown
Instructions. Tagset.

After nominations close, I will go through the tagset and manually delete duplicates (Star Trek: AOS has a bunch, due to the way the AO3 nominations interface threw its hands up at my renamings at one point), as well as do other potentially necessary clean-up.

Nominations Clarification #3

  • Jan. 29th, 2019 at 1:24 PM
Thank you to all who've reworked their nomination or answered one of these posts! Here are all the currently outstanding issues.

Please fix this tag

DC's Legends of Tomorrow (TV)
Character: Amaya Jiwe/Charlie – If you want Charlie the character, please nominate as Character: Charlie and request Charlie's time pretending to be Amaya Jiwe in optional details.

Star Wars Sequel Trilogy
Worldbuilding: Rey's Parents – This sounds more like a Character tag. Please either rephrase into a worldbuilding issue (orphanages? child-rearing with limited resources? foundlings?) or nominate them as a character tag.

Does this fandom contain space?

City of Hunger (Video Game) – I glanced through the progress updates since last year, but couldn't find a mention of space travel or other space content. Did I miss something?

Fate/EXTRA – Is there space travel or other space content?

The Adventure Zone (Podcast) – Is there space travel or other space content?

Other fandom issues

WildStorm – this seems to be the name of a comic publisher, rather than a canon. Please nominate the characters and relationships under a more accurate fandom name.

Crossover Fandom: Supergirl (TV 2015)/Krypton (TV 2017) – specific crossovers aren't allowed. Please nominate as relationships under Crossover Fandom instead.

Nominations Clarification #2

  • Jan. 27th, 2019 at 10:29 AM
Thank you to all who've reworked their nominations! Here are all the currently outstanding issues.

DC's Legends of Tomorrow (TV)
Character: Amaya Jiwe/Charlie – did you mean to request a relationship, or is Charlie an alias of Amaya Jiwe's? If the former, edit to Relationship: Amaya Jiwe/Charlie; if the latter, edit to Character: Amaya Jiwe | Charlie. If you want Charlie the character, please nominate as Character: Charlie and request Charlie's time pretending to be Amaya Jiwe in optional details.

Witch Mountain (Movies - Hough)
Character: Tia Malone/Castaway
Relationship: Tony Malone/Castaway & Tia Malone/Castaway
– if you are trying to indicate that Tina and Tony are castaways, you can simply remove the /Castaway bit from the tag. If you are trying to do something else, please comment.

Worldbuilding: Tony and Tia rejoining the other Castaways – as is, this sounds more like a prompt than a worldbuilding tag. Perhaps you could reword this into something clearer?

Crossover Fandom: Supergirl (TV 2015)/Krypton (TV 2017) – specific crossovers aren't allowed. Please nominate as relationships under Crossover Fandom instead.

There are also unassociated characters for Dead Space and Halo. I will go and reassociate them today.

Nominations Clarification #1

  • Jan. 26th, 2019 at 11:52 AM
Nominators of Doctor Who, Saga (Comics), Star Trek: Alternate Original Series, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Voyager – please nominate according to the nominations instructions. Do not use AO3 canonical character tags.

Nominator of Star Wars Expanded Universe – please use either Star Wars New EU - All Media Types, Star Wars Legends - All Media Types, or some more specific subfandom (e.g. Rebels, Clone Wars) for your nomination.

ETA:

Nominator of Crossover Fandom: Supergirl (TV 2015)/Krypton (TV 2017) – please either nominate relationships under Crossover Fandom, or the characters under their respective fandoms.

Issues with individual tags:

DC's Legends of Tomorrow (TV): Character: Amaya Jiwe/Charlie – did you mean to ask for a relationship instead?
Thor (Movies): Relationship: Actor!Loki/Actor!Thor & Loki-as-Odin (Ragnarok) – if I am interpreting this scenario correctly, this would not be allowed under Space Swap's mandate. What are you requesting?

Additionally, AO3 is being annoying and losing the fandom for some tags. If you see your tags down there, please tell which fandom(s) they're supposed to go under.

Nominations Instructions

  • Jan. 25th, 2019 at 5:33 PM
Noms are open! Here are the instructions.

Tags that do not conform to these instructions will not be approved.

Please disregard everything AO3 says on the "nominate" page. Do NOT choose the canonical versions of whatever tag you're nominating. Tags are NOT restricted to characters only. Thank you. (AO3 doesn't let mods adjust what's on the nominations page.) If you have questions, please ask!

Please check what was agreed for your fandom on the franchise wrangling post. Write the fandom's name based on what was decided there. If your fandom has not been discussed on the franchise wrangling post, use the AO3 canonical. Please do not use "- All Media Types" tags unless decided on the franchise wrangling post. If you're nominating a character who's found in many canons (eg. Superman), has many versions, or who has a very common name, or a relationship with such a character, please add the fandom name in (brackets) after the name(s). If nominating a crossover between two space canons, that is allowed; nom it under Crossover Fandom.

Franchise Wrangling

  • Jan. 18th, 2019 at 2:13 PM
Or: how do you want to subcategorize large franchises, so people can actually view and use the tagset without breaking out Excel.

All Media Types? Into subfandoms? By time period? By location?

Make a thread for your canon (unless there is one already), and then discuss in the subcomments.

The end result of the threads on the 25th at 7pm EET (when nominations open) will be used to decide how nominations are approved.

Fandom Promotion

  • Jan. 13th, 2019 at 1:35 PM
So, you have a space fandom. However, other people might not have heard of it! Thankfully, there is a solution: Tell us why your canon is the best! Here's a nice format you can use to make it easier for people to find stuff: (copypasteable below)

The canon: The canon's name
What: The medium – TV, book, anime, RPF, 5-minute (posters/music video/etc), ... – some idea of the length would also be good, is it one book/season/movie, or is it longer?
Where: where it can be found – is there a legal free download, is it on Netflix, an Amazon link, etc
Quick pitch: Give us a brief tagline! "Sentient ants get a space program", "Space Opera detectives chasing a priceless alien artwork", "Gritty asteroid mining RPG", ...
More: Tell us all the reasons why it's awesome! What do you like about the canon? The characters, the tone/outlook, the central concept, the relationship between hero and antagonist, the prose style, anything!

Now, go forth and advertise and read the most space-y recs list this side of the Crab Nebula!

Schedule

  • Jan. 5th, 2019 at 2:34 PM
Space Swap 2019 clonks into motion! I will be quite busy in mid-January, but the fandom pimping post will go up then, and the franchise wrangling post a week or so before noms open. I do also aim to go through the info and rules posts and see if there's anything that could be clarified or expanded upon. (This exchange's DNW-prevention policy is that mods will randomly spot check gifts for DNW presence, and participants should contact mods for emergency pinch hit arrangement if they find they still have a gift with a DNW. This should likely be enshrined ) The numbers for nominations, offers, and requests will remain the same unless objected to.

Schedule:
Nominations start: 25 Jan 19:00 EET in your timezone | countdown
Nominations end: 3 Feb 19:00 EET in your timezone | countdown
Sign-ups start: 8 Feb 19:00 EET in your timezone | countdown
Sign-ups end: 17 Feb 19:00 EET in your timezone | countdown
Fics due: 11 Apr 19:00 EEST in your timezone | countdown
Reveals: 18 Apr 19:00 EEST in your timezone | countdown
Author reveals: 25 Apr 19:00 EEST in your timezone | countdown

This would be similar to last year's schedule, including having a deadline a few days before that other exchange commonly abbreviated as SS – [community profile] smutswap. The alternative is having everything a week later, but that would be less convenient for me for handling the nominations.
