Franchise Wrangling

  • Jan. 19th, 2025 at 8:16 PM
Or: how do you want to subcategorize large franchises, so people can actually view and use the tagset without breaking out Excel.

All Media Types? Into subfandoms? By time period? By location?

Make a thread for your canon (unless there is one already), and then discuss in the subcomments.

The end result of the threads on 26 Jan at 17:00 Finland (when nominations open) will be used to decide how nominations are approved.

Star Wars
Please discuss how to split Star Wars into subfandoms in this thread.

The modly suggestion would be to at least separate out Legends, the new expanded universe, and the movies, plus a fandom for Star Wars internal crossovers (e.g. Leia Organa (SWOT)/Female Revan (KOTOR))

Star Wars Crossovers

Star Wars: Resistance (Cartoon)

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
Star Wars Original Trilogy
Star Wars Prequel Trilogy
Star Wars Sequel Trilogy
Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008) - All Media Types
Star Wars: Rebels
Star Wars: The Bad Batch (Cartoon)
The Mandalorian
The Book of Boba Fett
Andor (TV)

Star Wars New EU - AMT

Star Wars Legends: The Old Republic (Video Game)
Star Wars Legends: Knights of the Old Republic (Video Games)
Star Wars Legends - All Media Types

Last year, The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett were merged; however, a bunch of nominators nominated them separately. Does the Space Swap populace still want them merged? If no-one replies, I will assume you prefer them separate.

Re: Star Wars
Some questions!

I know we're trying to avoid the 'All Media Types' when possible but what are we using that tag for characters/relationships that span several canon instances like Leia Organa, for example? Should we use the "Star Wars Crossovers" as the fandom tag and list everything she's in for a character study?

I still feel The Mandalorian & BoBF are too entwined to be separate fandoms, but can nominate them under crossover if that's how the community majority wants to go.

There's a tag for "Star Wars: Rebellion Era - All Media Types" in AO3, can we nominate under that or should we be more specific?

Thanks!

Re: Star Wars
For characters like Leia: can you pick a favorite source? You can opt in to others in the request optional details.

For Rebellion Era: is this Legends or New EU?

Re: Star Wars

I suppose that could work. Probably more for fic than vidding, to be honest. I just wondered how to best handle a single character who shows up across many sources.

From what I've seen, "The Rebellion Era" refers to the newer canon, but I haven't gone through everything in the tag on AO3.

Star Wars is a tough fandom for tagging and matching. :/

ETA:
And I'm thinking of nominations more from an offer side than a request side. Requesting is the easy part! LOL

Re: Star Wars
Having reconsidered this, and in light of other noms in Star Wars Crossovers, you could nom Leia as Character: Leia Organa (Any Era). Offering that tag + Fanvids should give you a multifandom Leia opportunity, in addition to the various other Leia opportunities.

Thanks! I think that sounds like it'd work.
I've used up my 5 fandom slots this round now, but I'll know for next time! :)

Re: Star Wars Query: Dawn of the Jedi
Would the Dawn of the Jedi comics fal under their own classification, considering the timeframe, or should it be posted under Legends?

Re: Star Wars Query: Dawn of the Jedi
Dawn of the Jedi is sufficiently distinct to get its own fandom tag!

Star Trek
Last year the split was

Star Trek: The Original Series
Star Trek: The Next Generation
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Star Trek: Voyager
Star Trek: Enterprise
Star Trek: Discovery
Star Trek: Alternate Original Series
Star Trek: Picard
Star Trek: Lower Decks
Star Trek: Progidy
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Star Trek Crossovers (for e.g. T'Pol (Enterprise)/Worf (TNG))

+ books by storyline (so e.g. the Rihannsu books would go under one fandom category), with standalones nominated on their own.

So! Say I want to nominate something from a storyline that only exists in the novels. Would it be, for example, "Relationship: Mr. Morden/Anna Sheridan (Babylon 5: The Shadow Within)", or simply Babylon 5 and put the novel in optional details? Does this make sense at all? :P

I'd suggest nominating under Babylon 5 and putting the novel-based prompts in the optional details.

She-Ra
This is late, but I'd like to nominate She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (2018), and I just remembered that it's associated with the fandoms She-Ra: Princess of Power (1985), Masters of the Universe (1987), and He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. Should I just go ahead and use the canonical, or should we talk about it in case someone nominates one of the others? The 2018 show is the only large fandom of the set, so I might be borrowing trouble.

Re: She-Ra
If the 2018 series is an independent property and can be understood without watching the other series, then you can nominate it with the canonical!

Re: She-Ra

I always nominate He-Man and MOTU for this one, but the Princesses of Power canonical makes sense for that show, since it is very different.

Toei Toku
Sentai/Rider - season by season feels like the best bet, not sure about Toeiverse crossovers? I’ve nominated under “Toei Tokusatsu” in another exchange last year, so long as it’s made clear only space seasons count?

Re: Toei Toku
I have no knowledge about tokusatsu, so whatever is the most logical way of sorting the canons for people in the fandoms! If there's a consistent "Crossover Fandom" title with a cast that depends on season, then you can nominate any characters that turn up in the space-y seasons under that title.

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl (Marvel 616)
No one's nominated any Marvel comics yet, so I went ahead and used the canonical The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl instead of nominating under the umbrella tag Marvel 616. (The Squirrel Girl comics are intended to be approachable for younger readers, so they largely stand alone, although most of the space characters originated in other franchises - for example, Galactus, who she faces in the second issue.) If it really bugs anyone, I can change it.
