All Media Types? Into subfandoms? By time period? By location?
Make a thread for your canon (unless there is one already), and then discuss in the subcomments.
The end result of the threads on 26 Jan at 17:00 Finland (when nominations open) will be used to decide how nominations are approved.
The canon: The canon's name
What: The medium – TV, book, anime, RPF, 5-minute (posters/music video/etc), ... Some idea of the length would also be good. Is it one book/season/movie, or is it longer?
Where: where it can be found – is there a legal free download, is it on Netflix, an Amazon link, etc
Quick pitch: Give us a brief tagline! "Sentient ants get a space program", "Space Opera detectives chasing a priceless alien artwork", "Gritty asteroid mining RPG", ...
More: Tell us all the reasons why it's awesome! What do you like about the canon? The characters, the tone/outlook, the central concept, the relationship between hero and antagonist, the prose style, anything!
Now, go forth and advertise and read the most space-y recs list this side of the Crab Nebula!
Creators have been revealed! Thank you to all our participants, especially our pinch hitters, for yet another smooth run of the exchange. This is the eleventh (!) Space Swap – I missed our anniversary, oops – and the ninth one with me at the reins. Here's to another successful decade!
Read the collection here. Thank you to all participants for making another year of Space Swap a success. Creators will be revealed in one week.

The Wanderers - Meg Howrey
Relationship: Helen Kane & Yoshihiro Tanaka & Sergei Kuznetsov (Wanderers), Fanfiction, Interactive Fiction
I love these astronauts with their exquisite self-control, their expertise at filling out evaluative questionnaires, their ability to maintain equanimity in the face of certain kinds of stress (imminent and unrelenting danger, long stints in small spaces, close quarters with the same two other human beings, waiting, waiting, waiting). They're extremely methodical in their work, their behavior, their thoughts. Nothing matters to any of them as much as showing that they're the best team to be sent into space because nothing matters so much to them as being in space. You can call them exemplary, unusual, strange. I enjoy spending time with them to the extent of skipping over all the chapters with the other characters on reread.
And I'm fascinated by the subtlety of the situation they're in--aware that they're constantly being watched, monitored, evaluated; constantly self-monitoring; constantly asking themselves whether Eidolon feels like a simulation or like the real thing...and I really love the uncertainty...I want it to be possible that it is the real thing but also might not be.
I want more of them! Show me a day in training or simulation that we didn't get to see. Let them gather together post-canon. Maybe they go to Mars. (What do they feel?) Or do some canon divergence in which Eidolon goes differently. Throw them into some new and maybe more science-fictional situation in which they can be them together and demonstrate their competence and cooperation and preoccupation with being far away from all other people, possibly in microgravity.
If you do want to play with the theme of the real versus the simulation, at the physical level and at the behavioral level, I'm very open to something that gets weird or meta. And if you're interested in making interactive fiction, I'd love it to be similar to a traditional narrative, but with choices that affect the plot. But I'd be equally interested in its pushing the weirdness and meta envelope. I'm fine with accessing various formats (HTML, TWINE, etc.)
You can find general likes in my letter.
current-world politics and events unless in-canon, stories focused on natural disaster or apocalypse, genocide, social and civil unrest, epidemics; "crapsack world" dystopias; financial troubles especially as motivation; abuse in requested character backstories (ok if canonical, but would prefer focus on character's current life); vehicular accidents involving real-world vehicles; nuclear explosions and radiation sickness; burns (including hot fluid and chemical; first-degree is fine), charred/on fire bodies/body parts alive or dead (food is fine, just not people as defined in the fic's world); out-of-control fires or aftermath (things like campfires ok); description of accidental heat damage or being trapped with damaging heat; pregnancy, childbirth, and related complications; de-aging; intergenerational incest within living memory; explicit underage sex; major illness (anything a character might never recover from: curable science-fictional/fantastical ones ok; injuries ok; mental illness ok); deaths of grandparents, parents, siblings, aunts/uncles, cousins; funerary rites and objects; ashes; widow narratives (in which the plot of the story is about someone losing their partner and mourning and having to adapt); the negative 'ugh'; the words 'gross' or 'yuck' to describe non-physical behavior; the word 'daddy' in any context; service-industry or mundane school/university AUs; characters who must be taken care of to the extent of losing agency; intragroup bullying/social status jostling/scheming (Carrie, Mean Girls, office politics, PTA power struggle trope); characters expressing a "fuck them" attitude (rivalry, nemeses, obsessive revenge ok; milder "never mind them" ok); weddings (aliens made them go through a ritual while on a mission ok); readerfic; accidental discharge of chemical projectile weapon; decapitation; description of corpses; "onscreen" Mireille (ok that she exists); parent-child relationships/issues and childrearing; death except regeneration and fantastical/sci-fi resurrections or transmutations (parent-child relationships and death are both preoccupations of the book, but please avoid those topics in favor of the astronauts getting to focus on being astronauts and on their wonder at and love of space, and/or on the theme of reality vs simulation. Concern with resolving danger in an emergency situation is fine, but not dwelling on the possibility of dying/having intrusive thoughts about either topic)

Futurama
Character: Zapp Brannigan (Futurama), Fanfiction
The tragedy of Zapp Brannigan! This poor man, who clearly has none of the attributes that would allow him to excel and thrive at his job, and yet has somehow come to occupy this role. He also clearly wants so very much to be the man he's supposed to be, maybe both the ridiculous trope version and the competent captain version. Usually I love the actual hypercompetents, but there's something about Brannigan's situation and the way he lives it--pretending at overconfidence, and then suddenly, helplessly vulnerable--that moves me. I think it's partly the meta-ness of it. Here he is in a very knowing canon satirizing a pop-cultural misrepresentation of a character/type. I'm not sure that he could choose something else even if he tried; I think the trope might push him right back into it. (How would he find agency in that situation?) I love that he has no pants. I love that he recognizes how badly he's in over his head, and still tries. I genuinely wish him well, even as I know how hard he is for the other characters who have to deal with him.
I'd like something that takes Brannigan seriously and sympathetically, that asks what it would be like to be him. If it's got tragedy and pathos, that would be amazing. If it's also funny, I would be so impressed. It's okay if that humor is somewhat at his expense, as long as it's kind to him. Feel free to play with the meta and the knowingness and get weird with it, if inspiration takes you that way.
You can find general likes in my letter.

Stargate Atlantis
Relationship: Rodney McKay/John Sheppard (SGA), Relationship: Rodney McKay & John Sheppard (SGA), Fanvid
John and Rodney are very dear to me, and while I know that there are many McShep vids out there...I'm greedy, I want one for me! Something full of my likes. Something that harnesses the gorgeous power of current-day vidding tools while being unapologetically oldschool (which for me means probably a songvid, whether it constructs a story or retells canon events).
Things I would love, in no particular order, not all of which might go together:
- John's loneliness (John is my blorbo)
- Flying; flying in space, flying in atmosphere, flying underwater
- Shep whump
- Melancholy and yearning (say, a sense of alienation, wistfulness, or I'm up for something straight up sad as long as it's not grief/mourning for one of them: maybe the past, unrequited feelings, or repression resolved or not resolved, or fights or a friendship in trouble)
- Or painful joy? Overwhelming joy?
- Distance and intimacy
- Togetherness/fittingness
- Juxtapositions
- Indulging in gorgeous shots (lighting, scenery, Atlantis, space)
- Indulging in both characters' gorgeousness (and if it's that kind of vid, showing them appreciating each other's bodies)
- Team! Ronon & Teyla & Rodney & John; team being there for each other
- Reaction shots full of feeling (that may or may not have been contextually about each other in the original)
- Humor
- John Sheppard making faces
- Music that has (or develops) momentum, images that build up
- A moment of quiet at the end
- John touching Rodney (I mean, vice versa too...)
- The pleasure of each other's company (sidelong glances, looking at each other a lot in general, grins, coordinated movements, hanging out together, teasing and playing, getting up to unwise things together)
- Thinking too much about each other (whether that's worry or preoccupation or ?)
- Saving (or trying to save) each other
- John the soldier
- Rodney the brave
- Feelings, so many feelings

I love that he recognizes how badly he's in over his head, and still tries. I genuinely wish him well, even as I know how hard he is for the other characters who have to deal with him.
I'd like something that takes Brannigan seriously and sympathetically, that asks what it would be like to be him. If it's got tragedy and pathos, that would be amazing. If it's also funny, I would be so impressed. It's okay if that humor is somewhat at his expense, as long as it's kind to him. Feel free to play with the meta and the knowingness and get weird with it, if inspiration takes you that way.

You can find general and music and vid likes in my letter.

You can find general and music and vid likes in my letter.

Sound-related DNWs: Fadeout without a cadence/before the end of a phrase; echo/reverb sound effects; ASMR-video style sound; child performers famous for being child prodigies; original voiceovers

- Saving (or trying to save) each other

Ender Series - Orson Scott Card
Relationship: Bonzo Madrid/Ender Wiggin (Ender - Card), Relationship: Bean/Ender Wiggin (Ender - Card), Relationship: Bean/Bonzo Madrid (Ender - Card), Relationship: Achilles/Bean (Ender - Card), Fanfiction, Interactive Fiction
(more of my opinions on the ships themselves in my letter!)
I just finished the books Ender’s Game & Ender’s Shadow for the first time (yeah, I know). Those books are really something when you read it as an adult—tragic, full of dark themes including child abuse, child soldiers, children commiting murder and genocide, child psychopaths… and so much more. But they also have so many philosophical debates that, as an adult, you can’t help but wonder “is that supposed to be for kids???”
I don't pay much mind to the characters' ages in these books because I have to suspend disbelief with them anyway, so do with that whatever you will, keep their canon ages or age them up if you don't like that, pretend they are already teenagers when they are in school, or just pretend you don't know their ages to begin with.
I intend to read all of the Shadow series and perhaps Speaker for the Dead, but I don’t know if I’ll continue from that point considering the reviews I’ve seen. In any case, my ships & prompts (other than perhaps Achilles/Bean) mostly focus on the Battle School era, so if you’re doing canon review or picking up a new canon, the rest of the series really doesn’t matter that much. I also feel neutral about spoilers if you want to include events from the other Shadow books, as long as there’s enough context for me to know what’s going on, I’m sure I’d still enjoy it to death!
If by any chance you do Ender/Bean, I prefer Ender the "toppy" one of the two.

Rick and Morty
Relationship: Evil Morty/Morty Smith (Rick and Morty), Character: Evil Morty (Rick and Morty), Fanfiction, Interactive Fiction
Finished S7 and I couldn't believe I could love EM more but I do. Just give me anything for him.
Random prompts and relationships for idea fodder:
- Evil Morty/Main Morty my beloved. "We are not so different, you and I" and all that good jazz. From something lighthearted (EM just wants a friend) to something darker (EM nonconning Morty and the likes) all good for me. (For more prompts on this ship visit my letter)
- character study! So much character study!
- building up on EM's backstory. Did he have other Ricks before Evil Rick? Was he a "natural" Morty or a clone?
- descending into villainy, sympathetic villains
- not a villain but a tragic hero
- EM&/Evil Rick
- Horror from EM's POV (learning about what Mortys are good for, learning about the Morty farm etc.)
- Horror from Evil Rick's POV
- Horror in general
- Rick/Morty in general is welcome a long as EM is still the focus

DCU (Comics)
Relationship: Koriand'r/Komand'r (DCU Comics), Fanfiction
I’d like for this one to be darker or kinkier, if you’re willing to go that way.
Since DCU is so vast, here’s the Comic appearance I’m thinking of: The New Teen Titans Vol 1 #22 (from near the end) - #24 (August 1982). Of course they meet on other occasions in later runs but this is the first/OG confrontation that gave me all the ideas.
Kory was sold into slavery by her sister in the past, and when Blackfire made her first appearance after the founding of the New Teen Titans, she captures Kory on her ship intending to enslave her again while making this speech that’s um… very sexually charged. She’s really excited to make her sister into her personal slave. And let’s just say I’d like to see this going to where 80s teen comics weren’t allowed to go.
Noncon, obsession, torture (especially the sexual kind), forced BDSM/bondage and sexual slavery with that sisterly rivalry baked in? YES PLEASE.
If you want to know more on Tamarran and what their society is like for research purposes, I point to the New Teen Titans Vol 2 (1984) #13 - 18 where the Titans go there. But it doesn’t matter to me where you want to set this, it can be inside a spaceship or a random planet/space station/the citadel or whatever.
I’m also all up for adding minor characters/OCs for gangbang such as the ape-like aliens from the citadel. I’d like to see Kory enslaved just for once and yes if you can make this more dirtybadwrong I’m all up for it!
DNW-DCU:
- if the character Dick Grayson is mentioned/relevant, dnw him being woobiefied or whumped, dnw implications of bottom or submissive Dick (with Kory or with anyone else). It'd be fine if he isn't mentioned at all.
