Nomination clarification

  • Dec. 2nd, 2014 at 4:37 PM
I've been going through and approving some of the nominations and have a few questions on some fandoms I'm not familiar with.

A reminder that this exchange focuses on space-related fandoms. Our working definition is: "Some sort of intelligent beings in space at some point (before, during, or after canon) in a way that's significant to some aspect of the narrative."
"Significant to the narrative" is subjective and largely up to participants, but we hope people will keep the spirit of "SPACE" in mind. We do want people (of some sort) in space (at some point), and not just objects. So aliens yes; missiles and satellites, no.

These don't appear to be space-related fandoms (going by wikipedia - which I realize isn't always thorough).
If you nominated these, please let me know how it qualifies for space and/or if I've googled the correct fandom. If I don't hear back by the time nominations close, I'll go ahead and remove them.
Thank you!!!!

+ Homestruck - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homestuck approved

+ Surge Concero - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ar_nosurge approved
+ Lionel Nimrod's Inexplicable World - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lionel_Nimrod%27s_Inexplicable_World
+ Kingdom Hearts - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom_Hearts (other than a reference to Final Fantasy tie-in, I don't see any space/galaxy/planet references on the wiki page?)
+ Rebuild of Evangelion | Evangelion: New Theatrical Edition - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rebuild_of_Evangelion

I've not rejected anything, if you see a rejection please check the tag set to see if a character name/fandom name was corrected. I had some trouble with DCU and Justice League & Justice League Unlimited (Cartoons) characters.

P.S. I've not touched any of the Doctor Who nominations yet as I have to review what we did with that last year. done!
All other pending nominations as of the time of this post have been approved.

Oh, I thought I had re-nominated the ones about the cartoon in "John Stewart (JL&JLU)" and "Wally West (JL&JLU)" to prevent AO3 from reject them during the sign up, clearly I didn't.

I suppose "John Doe" was auto-correct. *giggle*

ETA: Could re-nominate one John Stewart in John Stewart (JL&JLU) or something different anyway, to avoid it being rejected during sign ups? Sorry about this.

Well, it's best to use the tags that already exist in AO3 whenever possible. I'm not a tag wrangler, so I can't really speak to what characters are officially associated in what fandom tag.

Were you meaning to nominate more than one fandom, or were you attempting to simply get those characters approved? Because they don't need to be in duplicate fandoms if you're just wanting specific characters - in fact, they shouldn't be unless you're treating them as distinct fandoms.
Do you think the umbrella of DCU would be the more accurate umbrella fandom to house the characters under?

Haha - no. John Doe was just me using an example. :)

ETA: and I just noticed your ETA. What do you mean rejected during sign ups?
The nomination period is when we establish the tag set that we'll be using for sign ups. Now is the time to iron out what we need/want.

I'm particularly fond of the cartoon version of the characters, that is why I nominated that first.

But I also like other versions of the same characters, that are quite different actually from the ones on the cartoon, that is why I decided to add that to my nominations. However it was so hard to choose just one fandom more when there are so many continuities, that is why I just settled for "DCU" eventually.

Besides I also like the current Green Lantern and The Flash alter egos Hal Jordan and Barry Allen (that are the main characters of in the New 52 books for example) that can't be nominated on the cartoon tag - one isn't in the cartoon, the other is just a background character.

My doubt about using 'DCU' as fandom tag, however, is that people wanting request/offer it could be paired up to other person who requests or offers for continuities they aren't familiar with or don't care for (for example, character personalities, backgrounds and storylines underwent a big restyling on the last continuity).

And about the ETA, thinking of it, it depends on how you handle the settings for the sign ups: if you set the sign ups in order that there are or aren't duplicate character tags.

It happened to me that while I was signing up to an old gift exchange I couldn't select an approved character tag falling under two fandom umbrellas (something like "Steve Rogers" for comics and "Steve Rogers" for movies, probably) and I had eventually to choose either.

I still don't understand your question about duplicate characters sign ups?

The requests/offers available at sign up will be based on the tag set we're currently creating.

Not to be harsh, but if you're nominating them so you can request/offer the same character in more than one fandom then that's not what we want.
If, on the other hand, you're nominating the characters under different fandoms because you view them as different characters, then I think it's more logical to list them separately.

I'm fine with leaving it as is for now because I know comics fandoms (both Marvel and DC) have many version/universes/etc.

So, to wrap this up, let's try a straightforward approach.
- Are you satisfied with how your nominations are currently listed in the tag set?
- If not, what changes would you like to make to your nomination?

To anyone else reading this thread: I also welcome input on this topic from anyone else familiar with or interested in the DCU fandom. I'm happy to go with whatever will work best for the participants.

Hope this helps nail down this issue! :)

So sorry that I didn't get back to you earlier!

I'm unsure how to reply to your question. In a way they are the same characters, and in another way they aren't. Characters' personalities, dynamics, and settings are sometimes so much different for same characters associated with different Universes. Still, they keep some basic elements that make them recognizable.

I'm OK if you prefer not to keep the characters from two different Continuities, don't worry. In this case, though, I'd like to keep Wally West and John Stewart from Justice League cartoon, and Hal Jordan and Barry Allen from 'New 52 (DC comics)' (I don't think there's a tag for this canon yet though, strangely enough, I tried to check for it in the past too, and never got a result).I don't really care for Hal from before the New 52 reboot, so that's why I'd prefer the specific Continuity.

Just to clarify, you're saying you want to change the fandom association for characters Hal Jordan and Barry Allen from DCU to 'New 52 (DC Comics)'. I cannot find this particular fandom tag in AO3 either.

Is this the fandom you're talking about?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_The_New_52_publications
Currently the characters you mention are in the tag set under the fandom 'DCU'. From the description on the wiki page where it says "The intent was to publish 52 ongoing titles each month across the DC Universe." it sounds like DCU is the appropriate fandom for these characters.
ETA: you could always request AO3 tag wrangling assistance (FAQ about fandom tags) to help determine the correct new fandom tag. If you're concerned that you've looked for it before and have not been able to find it.
((Edited because the official AO3 tagging point is really outside the realm of what we can do here at space swap. ))

Options.
A) leave the characters under the original nomination fandom of 'DCU;
B) create the new fandom tag for our tag set for space swap that may or may not be wrangled 'officially' by AO3 (and thus, not likely to be used by others - keep in mind matching might be difficult).

Please let me know how you'd prefer to proceed: A or B

Yep, that's the one. :)

Since you ask me, I still think it would make it clearer to use the unofficial temporary fandom tag 'New 52 (DC Comics)' or even better 'DCU (New 52 comics)' (there's no need to put in a request to the wrangler team and make it official: I've just checked and it appears New 52 fanworks got the Fandom Tag 'DCU (Comics)' and the Continuity tag 'New 52' is in the additional tags list instead - that enables the works to be findable with the search system, but it's of no use on exchange matches).

But, I understand if you prefer to let it like it is now, DCU.

Thanks, and sorry for the uber-long thread. ^^;

Sorry to jump in here!

One of the problems that the tag system has on AO3 is that one character may be associated with multiple titles (either because they're in them or because of really awesome crossovers) and when setting up a tag set for a fic exchange you might have wandering tags. The way you get around this is to disambiguate -- that is, John Stewart (JL&JLU) and John Stewart (DCU), for example -- to make it clear that for the tag set for this exchange , there are meant to be two John Stewarts and they are meant to be associated with particular series. The tags created for a tag set in a fic exchange aren't kept on AO3 and are literally just used for matching purposes. When you upload a story, definitely use the canonical tags on AO3! But when creating a tag set for a fic exchange, disambiguation is the way to go!

That is correct, we are creating a tag set specifically for this exchange.
Thanks for highlighting that point. :)
