Franchise Wrangling

  • Feb. 10th, 2017 at 4:18 PM
Or: how do you want to subcategorize large franchises?

All Media Types? Into subfandoms? By time period? By location?

Make a thread for your canon (unless there is one already), and then argue out in the subcomments.

The end result of the threads on the 17th at 17:00 GMT (when nominations open) will be used to decide how nominations are approved.

Star Wars
Star Wars. The huge thing.

Re: Star Wars
We are so C.F. in this fandom.

Old Republic Era
Prequel Era
Original Trilogy Era
Sequel Era

Then there's Canon vs Legends as far as material goes.

And not everyone agrees what is in each era. Like, obviously Rogue One should go with Original Trilogy because it's literally MINUTES before the first movie opens. But what about Rebels? It follows The Clone Wars, yet is closer in time to the Original Trilogy.

But most of us, as readers and/or writers, can really only comfortably work in certain eras, so the All Media Types sometimes bites us.

Personally, as long as I can narrow my selection down by characters and/or pairings, All Media Types does work best for me, mostly because I like to dabble in multiple eras.

Re: Star Wars
There will be no requesting or offering "any" this round, so the only thing that might be affected is worldbuilding tags. (You offer Worldbuilding: Lightsabers thinking of Luke, then match with someone who only wants Old Republic Lightsabers, that sort of thing.)

Re: Star Wars
Ahh.

Then I'd break it out by sets.

Prequel Trilogy
Original Trilogy
Sequels/The Force Awakens

The Clone Wars
Rebels

Knights of the Old Republic

Star Wars Legends

Rogue One

(I am possibly missing major blocks, but those are the ones coming to mind fastest.)

Re: Star Wars
I think I'd at least like to have Official Canon and Legends separate, as well as perhaps some era seperation.

Based on this and this, I think I'd split Legends like Wookieepedia does, and maybe split Canon into Films-Only and Everything?

Re: Star Wars
That sounds pretty brilliant, I think.

Re: Star Wars
Comics get their own large set, for example Star Wars - Marvel Comics, or should they be nominated separately, by title, like Star Wars: Poe Dameron, Star Wars: Han Solo, etc?

MCU
I'd like it organized with a large set for all the MCU movies, and then separated sets for each show, or the ones eligible anyway.

Re: MCU
Is Agent Carter eligible? There's no space exploration, but the season two had the Zero Matter who would link the infected people to another dimension.

I suppose Dare Devil, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage aren't eligible? Or they are?

Re: MCU
If "another dimension" means "alternative reality with no space travel invoved", then no, they're not eligible. I am not personally familiar with any of the shows mentioned, but if there is not space travel (aliens sending their children to Earth, villainous Martians, etc) then they're not eligible.

Re: MCU
Okay, thanks. Agent Carter has a character who experimented on a piece of alien technology on the Movies, but I don't recall whether there's alien technology from their universe on the show. Anyway, I suppose if there were, it would be negligible details.

Gundam
By (sub)series, preferably.

So I could for instance nominate Gundam Wing Frozen Teardrop and not have it subsumed under Gundam Wing (thanks, AO3) despite the timeskip, new cast members, different characters using original-series names, etc. Ditto nominating Gundam 00F without it being lumped into Gundam 00 (different cast altogether), and so forth.

Re: Gundam
Also; it would let me, frex, nominate Gundam Wing: The Glory of Losers (a reboot/retelling) and keep it separate from the original -- there's some significant changes and many additions in Glory that separate it from the original anime.

I don't know how others feel about it, but I'm okay if The Expanse (TV show and books) are lumped into one big fandom. Would I nominate that as The Expanse-All Media Types?

I haven't watched it, but I seem to recall hearing that they made some significant changes for the TV series. Would you think that anyone requesting one would be okay with the characterizations from the other?

Good question. They've shifted up the timeline for a lot of event, and toned down the language for one of the characters, but the authors are actively involved in running the show, so I don't expect it to veer too much off course?

But I can nominate them as two separate fandoms!

I'm tempted to nominate Young Justice (Cartoon). It contains aliens, stories on other planets, and space travel, but it is very closely tied to earth, and the characters I mostly want to nominate are Earthlings who (to the best of my knowledge) never left Earth's gravity Well. I wanted to check and see if that was okay before I went ahead and nominated them.

Yes, it's ok, as long as the fandom contains space.
