Fandom Promotion!

  • Jan. 15th, 2018 at 8:10 PM
So, you have a space fandom. However, other people might not have heard of it! Thankfully, there is a solution: Tell us why your canon is the best! Here's a nice format you can use to make it easier for people to find stuff: (copypasteable below)

The canon: The canon's name
What: The medium – TV, book, anime, RPF, 5-minute (posters/music video/etc), ... – some idea of the length would also be good, is it one book/season/movie, or is it longer?
Where: where it can be found – is there a legal free download, is it on Netflix, an Amazon link, etc
Quick pitch: Give us a brief tagline! "Sentient ants get a space program", "Space Opera detectives chasing a priceless alien artwork", "Gritty asteroid mining RPG", ...
More: Tell us all the reasons why it's awesome! What do you like about the canon? The characters, the tone/outlook, the central concept, the relationship between hero and antagonist, the prose style, anything!

Now, go forth and advertise and read the most space-y recs list this side of the Crab Nebula!

The canon: Andromeda
What: TV show, 5 seasons that aired between 2000-2005
Where: Seasons 1-2 are included with Amazon Prime
Netflix DVD program has all 5 seasons (this is USA only - I think?)
Quick pitch: Andromeda is set thousands of years in the future, Captain Hunt and the crew of the Starship Andromeda set out on a mission to rebuild the Systems Commonwealth 300 years after its fall. It was based on previously unused materials written by late writer Gene Roddenberry and earlier seasons were produced by Majel Barrett.
More: Campy Space Opera - ftw!!! It has a healthy dose of 'found family' albeit a dysfunctional one.

The canon: Dark Matter
What: 3-season Syfy show
Where: currently streaming on Netflix
Quick pitch: Six people wake up on a spaceship without their memories and must figure out who they are and which of them has a reason to kill the others. (Or maybe they all do!)
More: I did a basically-nonspoilery rec post at my blog a little while back. A short list of enticements: twisty plots, humor, found family IN SPACE!, lots of great female characters (sails through the Bechdel test every single episode!), canon LGBT characters, interesting themes about redemption and the nature of what it means to be a good person and to be human (or not), cool sci-fi worldbuilding, all the classic SF tropes (e.g. clones, mirrorverse doubles, body-possessing aliens, robots with emotions, space pirates, etc).

It was cancelled by Syfy last year, so it ends on a forever cliffhanger (boooo) but I feel like the existing part of the series is so much fun that it's worth it anyway, and most of the outstanding questions are actually answered prior to the end of season three, so it's more like "Now I'll never know what happens next" than "Now I'll never know the answer to pressing question X, Y, Z" -- as eternal cliffhangers go, it's not the worst ever.

Oh noooo, I'm sorry you don't! I didn't realize it wasn't widely available; so far the people I've recced it to have been able to watch it in their countries. Region rights is such an annoying mess. :(

Maybe it's available in the America related region, or regions? I live in Europe, and I'd love to watch it again, legally this time, but unfortunately no one bought the rights where I live, and after the cancellation that could never happen. :(

Well, that won't stop me from request & offer it, as I love this show to bits and I'm always up for more fanwork for it. :D

The canon: Killjoys
What: television series of three 10 episode seasons
Where: dvd/blu ray though I believe just for region 2
Quick pitch: snarky space bounty hunter team led by deadly gorgeous lady ex-assassin. Themes of the importance of self-determination and finding your people.
More: Last year I called this a space western, which it still is, but we also got a lot of wider galactic mystery in season three. The main team is a dangerous lady with a mysterious past (Hannah John-Kamen), her platonic life partner and pilot/engineer (Aaron Ashmore), and his brother who has been in the army/missing for almost 10 years, who shows up with dangerous secrets of his own (Luke McFarlane). Has great side characters. Bad things happen in the show, but the tone is essentially hopeful. Each episode has entertaining sci-fi action, but there is an overarching plot of galactic danger as well.
