Franchise Wrangling

  • Jan. 23rd, 2018 at 7:53 PM
Or: how do you want to subcategorize large franchises, so people can actually view and use the tagset without breaking out Excel.

All Media Types? Into subfandoms? By time period? By location?

Make a thread for your canon (unless there is one already), and then discuss in the subcomments.

The end result of the threads on the 31st at 1am X-ray (when nominations open) will be used to decide how nominations are approved.

Star Wars?

Selfishly, I like having it separated out into subfandoms so I can nom/request more things and focus on the areas I like, but it does make "crossovers" a pain.

The modly suggestion would be to at least separate out Legends, the new expanded universe, and the movies. Last year, we split it out like this:

Star Wars (Marvel Comics)

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)
Star Wars Original Trilogy
Star Wars Prequel Trilogy
Star Wars Sequel Trilogy
Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008) - All Media Types

and an agreement to separate out Knights of the Old Republic.

Clone wars
So the canon tag for the clone wars 2008 series includes “- all media types” am I right in leaving that out, or should I put it in? I know you said not to put all media types in but that is the AO3 tag

Re: Clone wars
In this case, unless you specifically want something only about the show, or a tie-in novel, you may use the AMT tag.

I really haven't made a proper list of my intended nominations, but I'd suggest going with as specific as possible with subfandoms. AO3 tends to lump subfandoms together and things like AMT can get confusing.

Unfortunately, there are fandoms where there are multiple equally valid ways of splitting it up, hence this post. Hopefully enough people participate that we can split and lump the fandoms in a way that best suits our participants' needs.

Unfortunately, I have nothing to offer ahead of time about anything I might nominate, then. Hopefully it'll work out.

Are we doing the Arrowverse and Defenders nominations grouped like the other recent exchanges?

- DC's Arrowverse (includes The Flash, Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, Constantine, Vixen and The Ray)

- Defenders Shows (Defenders, Iron Fist, Daredevil, Luke Cage, Punisher, Jessica Jones)

MCU movies grouped together? DCEU movies?

Oops, I wasn't thinking this through. I doubt that the Defenders shows are eligible so nevermind that. What about the DC shows and movies? Are them all eligible, or are there any ineligible? Maybe Constantine, Vixen and Suicide Squad are the ones ineligible?

The eligibility goes by fandom, not franchise. If a movie or show contains space travel, it is eligible. If it's set wholly on Earth and no-one's origin stories involve space travel, it's ineligible. Sci-fi elements by themselves aren't enough. So, Legends of Tomorrow in, Wonder Woman not.

I gather from your answer that we should nominate all of them separately, no groupings, am I correct?

Yes, please nominate them separately by fandom.

The only eligible Arrowverse is Supergirl and maaaaaybe Legends of Tomorrow. (The show bothers with space very rarely but there have been 2 or 3 episodes set there.) idk but I don't think Supergirl and Lot require being grouped together?
(Anonymous) wrote:

Why maybe Legends of Tomorrow? They travel in space on more than one occasion, and they meet aliens from space in a couple of episodes too.

On Arrow and The Flash, while rarely the focus, they also fought aliens coming from space once or two, so I think they should be in too.

I'm all for Legends of Tomorrow being in and that seems to be the case. For Arrow/Flash, if aliens only show up once a year during the corporate crossover, it's really not a space canon imo. But that's for the mod to decide, anyway.

If the participants feel it would be more comprehensible/sensical if lumped, they are free to nom it lumped.

I'm unsure that I understand what you mean, are we going to have the Arrowverse shows lumped together, or are we going to have them some lumped and some separated?

Upon further modly discussion: separate all of them. Apologies for the miscommunication.

It only makes sense to me if the entire Arrowverse qualifies. Is that the case? (I don't personally prefer lumping but I guess I just need directions at this point.)

If I wanted to nominate what could be arguably considered an Arrowverse crossover ship specifically in Legends of Tomorrow, would that be allowed given the fandoms are being separated? The pairing is Sara Lance/Felicity Smoak, and I'd be prompting largely for Felicity-in-Legends-settings if that makes a difference. Plus with the canon crossover episodes there's arguably room to justify Felicity as an occasional Legends character in her own right. However, she is a main on Arrow so I wasn't sure if that would be heading too far into crossover territory.

I'm also considering my Star Trek nomination options, and considering requesting from one or more of the DS9 relaunch novels. I assume I should nominate it/them separately as books if I do? (Or should they be lumped into Star Trek DS9 - as tie in books they assume DS9 show knowledge, but not everyone who watched DS9 will have read any of the novels...)

If she appears on Legends of Tomorrow, then it goes under Legends of Tomorrow.

Unless you feel there's strong reason to nom the books under the TV show, I'd suggest splitting them. More fandoms!

I hate trying to work out who appeared in what for the crossover eps (I can never remember which show got which part/episode of the story arc :/), but IMDB gives Felicity's actress four Legends specific episode credits, so phew! That's simpler than I thought, thank you!

And wonderful, if I do nom I'll stick to the book names for the fandom then. Even though there's implied show knowledge, it's a very distinct future time/setting that's different to the show. I'm just not used to handling tie-in fandoms so I thought I'd check to be safe.

Sorry to ask another Star Wars question, but - we should group them under the kind of (broad) tags in the fandom, right?

For example, say I want to request Mara Jade. Would I request:

Star Wars:Legends? (broad tag that would encapsulate all pre-Disney EU, including Mara)
Star Wars:(Legends:)Thrawn Trilogy? (point of origin for the character)
Star Wars:(Legends:)New Jedi Order? (main series I'd be requesting)

Sorry if this is obvious, first-time participant!
