Sign ups open from now to February 8, 2014

Please feel free to spread the word and promote the exchange. The more the merrier!

Requests, Offers, and Matching

You will need to request at least 3 fandoms, and can request up to 6. For each fandom, you can request up to 4 nominated characters. If you select 0, the person assigned to you may make something with any nominated character or general worldbuilding.

You'll also need to offer at least 3 fandoms, and can offer up to 10. For each fandom, you must offer to create for at least 2 of the nominated characters. You can also offer 'any'.

Matching will work on the following categories:
- fandom
- freeform (fanwork type)
- character
All fields are part of the tag set

You may select 'other' as a freeform but it cannot be the only option selected. Details about 'other' fanworks you are interested in receiving can be noted under optional details or in a 'Dear Spacer' letter*.

You may focus on one, some or all of the characters in your assignment - you are not required to incorporate all. A reminder that when choosing the option 'Any' means that you could potentially match to anything in that category.

Hi, I'm having a little trouble signing up. For each thing, I ticked off the fandom I wanted, the characters I wanted from the dropdown (or clicked any), filled in a suggestion, and for offers, I did the same thing and chose meta and fanfiction for each. But it gave me this big error message:

Sorry! We couldn't save this ChallengeSignup because:

Request: your Request must include between 3 and 6 fandom tags, but you have included 1 fandom tags in your current Request.
Offer: your Offer must include between 3 and 10 fandom tags, but you have included 1 fandom tags in your current Offer.
You have submitted more than one request with the same freeform tags. This challenge requires them all to be unique.
You have submitted more than one offer with the same freeform tags. This challenge requires them all to be unique.

can you tell me what it means? It's all greek to me.

I think I had a setting wrong on the fandom category. Should be corrected now though. Let me know if you still have trouble.

I think I've corrected it. We had 'must be unique' selected on the settings-- which was apparently wrong?

I've just done a mock signup and it seems to be working, but let me know if you still have trouble.

Most of the errors are gone now, except this one:

Sorry! We couldn't save this ChallengeSignup because:

Request: your Request must include between 3 and 6 fandom tags, but you have included 1 fandom tags in your current Request.
Offer: your Offer must include between 3 and 10 fandom tags, but you have included 1 fandom tags in your current Offer.

what's a fandom tag? Am I supposed to be clicking more than one fandom for each request or something?

I had to close my browser and try again after I corrected the settings.

It's because I had the challenge set to 3 requests/offers as the minimum and I also had 3 as the minimum fandom tag (which was wrong and yup -- I had it on both the request and the offer).
Sorry, hosting on AO3 is new for me. Ack!

"Must be unique" means that each of offers/requests has to have a unique fandom. Unchecking it allows for people to request/offer the same fandom more than once but give different character options for each.

Thanks, that's what I thought but then people were having issues so I thought maybe I was wrong.
Yes, "must be unique" is selected on the fandom category on the "request settings" because you can only request/offer a fandom once. The actual culprit was that I had 3 fandom minimum on the "request settings" as well as in the number of "requests and offers" section - (sorry, more back-end details than people need I think and wow, what awkward AO3 terminology- LOL)

tl;dr
In any case, the signup should be squared away. Let me know if you encounter any issues.

I'm not familiar with Doctor Who fandom personally, but we have had two posts on the community regarding questions surrounding the nominations

here and here

If you did not make nominations, my suggestion would be to look into the tag set to see where the characters you're interested in were nominated and go from there? There are 4 categories under TV and 1 under 'Other' if I recall correctly.

If that doesn't sort things out, let us know and I'll ask my co-mod to help.

As we're not required to write all characters requested by our assigned recipient, if I offer (for example) characters A, B, and C, would it be possible for me to match to someone who requested C and D?

Yes, that would be possible, but you wouldn't need to create something with D

Actually that is not true. If someone requests C and D, they'll only match with someone who offered both C and D (or C, D, and some other characters) or "any". They will not be matched with someone who offered only A, B, and C.

Requests are "and". Offers are "or".

We're setting the matching on AO3 to match on at least 1 fandom, 1 freeform (media type) and 1 character. Obviously the higher the number of matches the higher the ranking , but those are the minimums so it would be possible to match on only one character.

From AO3 FAQ
"For example, if you are running a multifandom exchange, one criterion for a match would be one fandom in common between requestor and offerer. You can also require that a match be made only if there is a fandom AND a character in common by indicating 1 fandom and 1 character on the form. This is considered the minimum. Any matches above the minimum required number will be used to rank the quality of potential matches"

Let me know if that helps clarify. We are not matching on someone requesting C and D any differently than someone requesting C or D - that's a nuance that is not taken into account when choosing characters in the form or for matching, but it can be mentioned in optional details.

Oh, I've never seen an exchange like this only match on one character before. I'm going to have to rework my requests then.

Glad you stopped by then :)
Hopefully the matching will be on more than one character if applicable for participants, but as we're also matching on fandom and type of media we aren't sure we can guarantee it.

Can I specify somewhere that I'm up for graphics AND fic and would prefer an assignment that lets me choose? Cause I have some fandoms I'm into on the list, but have written none of them before, and I'd feel less D: if I knew that graphics will be an option in case writing isn't happening.

I've modded before and know that might be asking too much, so I wanted to clear it up beforehand. :)

I've participated in challenges and have wished for this same thing, so I completely understand where you're coming from

If you make note of it in the optional details of your offer I will try to make that match. No guarantees but I will try :)
