Killjoys (TV)

General elements: Killjoys isn't a very ship-centric show, for me. I like the thematic elements in it, the elements of trauma, survival, memory, & found family. 

Things I definitely do like: 

- Space family made up of mercenaries and rogues navigating complex political situations

- Found family

- The interplay between religion, spirituality, politics, magic, and science 

- Religion and revolution (Alvis, Johnny)

- Class politics (Dutch, Delle Seyah, Pawter Simms)

- Political deviousness (Dutch, Delle Seyah, Pawter Simms)

- Eldritch fucking powerhouses (Aneela, The Lady)

- Religion, spirituality, and sexuality--and power (Fairuza, the Scarbacks, Alvis)

- Memory and identity (The Lady's "Memories are what make you who you are")

- cOLleCTIvE UncoNscIOuS

- The imagery is absolutely gorgeous: The Mother Tree, the branches, the roots, the rings, the memories, the interconnectedness

- HACKMODS YES MOAR

- The trio trying to maintain their political neutrality (and miserably failing)

- How Dutch will protect her messed-up little family even though it's little, and it's broken, because it's hers

- Complicated family dynamics (separate from abusive ones, though in the case of this show, the two tend to be adjacent to each other, and I'm totally fine with those elements being depicted) 

- Characters navigating and exercising agency in a system that's meant to box them in

- People who are bad at feelings shooting their emotions out (Dav, Dutch)

- Dutch's introduction as "deadly trained assassin, chooses not to kill for money" is one of the most meaningful (although limited) instances of the "I don't kill" moral line I've ever seen--it's not about the morals, it's about her choice, and her agency, and how she chooses to use these skills that she has, that she learned in a way that was rather traumatic to her

- The way that Aneela is in a lot of ways a reiteration of that same theme, in that her choice, or her ability to choose, was removed from her, her mind was altered, and her abilities were cultivated and exploited by the Lady

Honestly, I was not expecting to like the Zods as much as I did. But I'm a sucker for that kind of martial-code-family-angst, so:

- What is the Zods' history of protecting Kandor? What about the other city-states?

- Other religious cults on Krypton, their history.

- If you wanna drill down to the individual level--who do the Zods worship? Who does House Vex worship?

- There's all kinds of messy implications of eugenics and genocide in the Codex, and this show plays up the dystopian hints in Kryptonian society. Feel free to pull out any of the ones the show hints at: The sharp class divide, police brutality, totalitarianism, theocracy, genetic "selection"

- The Zods abide by this particular code of honor (especially Jayna-Zod)

- The origin of the Guild system
