Franchise Wrangling

  • Jan. 30th, 2020 at 8:03 PM
Or: how do you want to subcategorize large franchises, so people can actually view and use the tagset without breaking out Excel.

All Media Types? Into subfandoms? By time period? By location?

Make a thread for your canon (unless there is one already), and then discuss in the subcomments.

The end result of the threads on 7 Feb at 11:30 am EET (when nominations open) will be used to decide how nominations are approved.

Star Wars
Please discuss how to split Star Wars into subfandoms in this thread.

The modly suggestion would be to at least separate out Legends, the new expanded universe, and the movies.

Star Wars: Resistance (Cartoon)

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
Star Wars Original Trilogy
Star Wars Prequel Trilogy
Star Wars Sequel Trilogy
Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008) - All Media Types
Star Wars: Rebels

Star Wars Legends: The Old Republic (Video Game)
Star Wars Legends: Knights of the Old Republic (Video Games)
Star Wars Legends - All Media Types

Would a similar split be acceptable this year? (With an additional "Star Wars New EU - AMT" tag for the new tie-ins.)

Re: Star Wars
I think that sounds good!

Would you be interested in having something like "Star Wars Crossovers" as well? I would find it helpful personally, as I hate looking through the crossover Fandom list but there are within-franchise crossovers I like.

I see no problem with that.

Star Trek

Star Trek: The Original Series
Star Trek: The Next Generation
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Star Trek: Voyager
Star Trek: Enterprise
Star Trek: Discovery
Star Trek: Alternate Original Series

The movies (besides Alternate Original Series) often expand on storylines of specific shows, like Wrath of Khan for The Original Series, so those characters and stuff in the movies could be nominated with the shows. too. The character Saavik could be nominated under The Original Series.

Star Trek: Picard is now airing as well. It is sufficiently removed in time from TNG to feel like it would likely be better off as its own category as well.

+1 as a Picard viewer who is totally unqualified to offer TNG. There are new characters, as well.

Any ideas for the books?

I'm only familiar with the recent Pocket Books which share a common storyline, which I've been nominating recently as 'Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Relaunch Novels'. I'm not very familiar with other books though and have seen other books nominated by author or title though so it might be best evaluated on a case by case basis depending on common storylines.

I think it makes sense to nominate shared storylines together ([personal profile] shopfront's example of the DS9 Relaunch, the Rihannsu books, etc), but books that stand alone (like The Entropy Effect or Pawns and Symbols) should probably be nominated alone too.

There is a bit of a gray area though—for example, Spock's World shares characters and continuity with the Rihannsu books even though it isn't properly part of the series. Not sure if that should (hypothetically) be combined with Rihannsu or kept separate...

DC TV
Preference for shows nominated separately, with any in-Arrowverse crossovers nominated under the most relevant show. So probably:

Supergirl
Legends of Tomorrow

plus
Titans
Smallville
Lois & Clark
etc
