Franchise Wrangling

  • Jan. 20th, 2022 at 2:00 PM
Or: how do you want to subcategorize large franchises, so people can actually view and use the tagset without breaking out Excel.

All Media Types? Into subfandoms? By time period? By location?

Make a thread for your canon (unless there is one already), and then discuss in the subcomments.

The end result of the threads on 28 Jan at 19:00 EET (when nominations open) will be used to decide how nominations are approved.

Star Wars
Please discuss how to split Star Wars into subfandoms in this thread.

The modly suggestion would be to at least separate out Legends, the new expanded universe, and the movies, plus a fandom for Star Wars internal crossovers (e.g. Leia Organa (SWOT)/Female Revan (KOTOR))

Star Wars Crossovers

Star Wars: Resistance (Cartoon)

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
Star Wars Original Trilogy
Star Wars Prequel Trilogy
Star Wars Sequel Trilogy
Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008) - All Media Types
Star Wars: Rebels
Star Wars: The Bad Batch (Cartoon)

Star Wars New EU - AMT

Star Wars Legends: The Old Republic (Video Game)
Star Wars Legends: Knights of the Old Republic (Video Games)
Star Wars Legends - All Media Types

Would a similar split be acceptable this year? Have I missed a thing? Do people want Legends/the new EU split more?

Re: Star Wars

I'm good with this. As long as Legends are separated out, I'm a happy camper.

Re: Star Wars
It wouldn't accept "Star Wars: The Mandalorian" as a fandom tag because it said that it already existed as a freeform tag. The canonical tag is just "The Mandalorian (TV)", but since you're adding "Star Wars" to the others, I went with "Star Wars: The Mandalorian (TV)", which was acceptable to the AO3 form.

It also didn't like me nominating Din Djarin in both The Book of Boba Fett and in The Mandalorian, so I added "(The Book of Boba Fett)" after it for that nomination. He canonically appears in both.

Re: Star Wars
The "Star Wars" at the start of the other tags is just because that's the canonical form on AO3. I've approved the Mandalorian as "The Mandalorian (TV)".

AO3 will not accept the exact same tag under two fandoms. Adding a disambiguation (the name of the fandom) to it like you did is the way to go.

Star Trek
Last year the split was

Star Trek: The Original Series
Star Trek: The Next Generation
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Star Trek: Voyager
Star Trek: Enterprise
Star Trek: Discovery
Star Trek: Alternate Original Series
Star Trek: Picard

+ books by storyline (so e.g. the Rihannsu books would go under one fandom category), with standalones nominated on their own. As for franchise-internal crossovers, they'd be under the generic Crossover Fandom if none of the series fits. (If Crossover Fandom gets a huge slew of Star Trek internal crossovers, I'll ask the community about shifting those to a new Star Trek Crossovers fandom.)

Re: Star Trek
Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy can also reasonably be separated, I think.

Re: Star Trek

As a writer, I like the idea of a Trek Crossovers fandom to make it easier to find, but as a nominator it might cut down on what people can nominate.

I think a Star Trek specific crossover section might be useful as well.

Re: Star Trek
We'll trial a Star Trek Crossovers fandom this year. If there are only a few tags nominated I reserve the right to fold it into general crossovers if I think it best.

Re: Star Trek
Would Star Trek Crossovers be a good place to nominate worldbuilding that's series agnostic? Frex, I want to nominate "Worldbuilding: Civilians in the ST Universe" but I don't care if it's set during TOS or DS9 or whatever.

Re: Star Trek
I apologize if this is the wrong place to ask -- but is there a right way to nominate characters that exist across multiple series (like Worf, Seven, Spock, Pike, etc), and related pairings if both characters cross over? Do they belong in Star Trek crossovers, or just pick one of the shows?

Re: Star Trek
You pick the show you'd prefer. So if you'd prefer TNG era stuff, nominate Picard under TNG, whereas if you prefer Picard-era stuff, nominate Picard under Picard.

Stargate: I'd be interested in using the AMT tag personally but I'm also okay with it being split out into SG1, Atlantis, and Universe. I'm not sure how many people are interested in requesting/offering this year as well.

I'm hoping to nom/request/author just SG1 characters, but as long as it doesn't mess with matching, I don't mind it being combined. Tho, I think AO3 pretty definitely has them separated out so I don't know how much extra tag wrangling forcing it into one fandom might be.

While tag sets will respect the format they're nominated in, I would prefer separating them. This is mainly to ease tag discovery – it's easier to notice a tag one would be interested in if it's not buried within all the tags nominated under AMT. Please nominate the series separately.

Power Rangers
Some seasons involve space and other seasons don't. Most seasons are standalone enough that they can be on their own. The only exception is Mighty Morphin', Alien Rangers, Zeo, Turbo, and In Space. Those seasons tell an ongoing narrative and all have space connections.

The Turbo movie is in continuity with the show. The other two movies are each in their own alternate universe. Regardless of how the shows are handled, those two should be separated out.

The IDW comics are in continuity with each other for the most part. I'd group the comics together but keep them separated from the shows. Most comic fans would be familiar with the show, but not all show fans would be familiar with the comics.

Thank you! Your grouping sounds reasonable. Comics on their own, each standalone season on its own, and Turbo in with the show it's in continuity with.

Aliens versus Aliens movie verse versus what are we calling these?
My plan is to just nominate Aliens 1986 as I am in it for the Sulaco's little quartet of survivors, but I know AO3 often rolls it into the "Aliens Quadrilogy (Movies)" versus Aliens Prequels versus Aliens versus Predator movies versus Predator movies (which... good lord this franchise gets twisty and overlappy like none other).

Is anyone else planning to nominate in the franchise verse and/or would there be a preference for nominating?

Re: Aliens versus Aliens movie verse versus what are we calling these?
Nominate the movie as Aliens the standalone for now. If someone turns up and nominates the Alien Quadrilogy I'll ask if you want to fold your noms in with that.
