Authors Revealed!

  • Apr. 19th, 2023 at 9:00 PM
Authors have been revealed for the 2023 round! Thank you to all participants, signed up and pinch hitters alike – you are what keeps this exchange going.

While you are here, I'd like to hear your opinions on two things:

1. The canon promo post. This year, it was posted between nominations and sign-ups. Previously, it's been posted before either. Did you prefer the guarantee that the promoted thing would be in the tagset, or the extra time to check things out? Have you ever checked out anything based on the canon promo post, or is it just a bunch of people posting into the void?

2. The tagset. Currently, tags are nominated in the Character field and must be nominated like this:
Character: Leia Organa (OT)
Relationship: Leia Organa & Luke Skywalker (OT)
Worldbuilding: Bespin gas extraction (OT)

This format has several benefits: it allows matching on characters, relationships, or worldbuilding tags, the tags do not wander at all, and it is immediately obvious if someone has not read the nomination instructions. However, it means no canonical tags can be used, which means every association of tag to fandom has to be approved as well. The prefixes also eat from the 100-character maximum tag length, which might cause issues for poly relationship nominators in particular. Did you run into tag length issues?

The alternative would be to use the Relationship field and nominate the above like this:
Leia Organa & none (OT)
Leia Organa & Luke Skywalker (OT)
WB: Bespin gas extraction (OT)

The immediate issues with this would be that the tags might wander (so Luke & Leia (OT) might decide to visit the Sequel Trilogy fandom despite the disambiguation), and that someone who has not read the nominations instructions might think this is a purely relationship-matching exchange and fill up their nom slots before realizing they can nom and request single characters and worldbuilding.

If you have anything else you wish to talk about, I would be interested to hear as well! Anonymous commenting is on.

I like the current format because it keeps the tagset tidy and that makes my brain happy.

Suggestion: To minimize the concern about tag lengths, you could do initials instead of fully spelling out the words "character", "relationship" and "worldbuilding". For example:

C: Leia Organa (OT)
R: Leia Organa & Luke Skywalker (OT)
WB: Bespin gas extraction (OT)

"However, it means no canonical tags can be used, which means every association of tag to fandom has to be approved as well." Don't all tags to fandom have to be approved anyway?

I can't do the shortened prefixes for AO3 reasons. You see, if someone nominates WB: Bespin gas extraction (OT) in the character slot for Space Swap, then someone trying to nominate the same thing for Worldbuilding Exchange, which uses the relationship slot for worldbuilding noms, would have their tag reformatted to the extremely ugly WB: Bespin gas extraction (OT) - Relationship. I'm not going to screw over another mod's tagset like that. WB: Worldbuilding will only happen if we transition into using the relationship slot.

All tags need to be approved. However, if they're not canonical, I also need to go to a separate tab on the tagset and approve the association of the tag to the fandom. Sometimes AO3 loses the association when I'm approving stuff. It is extremely annoying.

I’d suggest that if you do change the format, then “Leia Organa & none (OT)” should be changed to (or used in addition to) “Leia Organa & any or none (OT)”, because to me, the first seems like you want a fic that’s mostly about Leia while the other characters have minor or no roles, while the second allows for fics that are either that or involve Leia’s relationship with one or more other characters

There are a few standardized options to go with. The popular ones are "Leia Organa & none (OT)" and "Solo: Leia Organa (OT)", though I'd investigate other options currently in use as well. I won't go for "Leia Organa & any or none (OT)" because I can just see people format the "any or none" part ten billion ways, causing an endless headache for tag approvals.

I'm a bit late, but I just want to say thank you for running this exchange, I always love participating in it, and I had a lot of fun this year too! ♡ I don't really have an opinion on either of these two things - I do generally read the canon promos and find fandoms to check out at some point, but so far it's never affected what I request or offer that year (but it could affect next years), and I haven't had any issues with the tag length. :)
