Franchise Wrangling

  • Jan. 20th, 2024 at 4:16 PM
Or: how do you want to subcategorize large franchises, so people can actually view and use the tagset without breaking out Excel.

All Media Types? Into subfandoms? By time period? By location?

Make a thread for your canon (unless there is one already), and then discuss in the subcomments.

The end result of the threads on 26 Jan at 21:00 IST (when nominations open) will be used to decide how nominations are approved.

Star Wars
Please discuss how to split Star Wars into subfandoms in this thread.

The modly suggestion would be to at least separate out Legends, the new expanded universe, and the movies, plus a fandom for Star Wars internal crossovers (e.g. Leia Organa (SWOT)/Female Revan (KOTOR))

Star Wars Crossovers

Star Wars: Resistance (Cartoon)

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
Star Wars Original Trilogy
Star Wars Prequel Trilogy
Star Wars Sequel Trilogy
Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008) - All Media Types
Star Wars: Rebels
Star Wars: The Bad Batch (Cartoon)
The Mandalorian & TBOBF
Andor (TV)

Star Wars New EU - AMT

Star Wars Legends: The Old Republic (Video Game)
Star Wars Legends: Knights of the Old Republic (Video Games)
Star Wars Legends - All Media Types

Would a similar split be acceptable this year? Do people want Legends/the new EU split more? Do people want The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett split this year?

Re: Star Wars
First, I'm fine with however the mod and majority want to categorize Star Wars. I know it's a lot of material and whichever way it goes isn't going to fit 100% every participant's desires.

Having a fandom tag for Star Wars internal crossovers is a good idea.

My two cents:

Shows
I think The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett can be combined since BOBF is intended as a "chapter" in the Mandalorian story.
While in the timeline with those two Disney series, I feel Ahsoka should be broken out because it ties more to other stories.
The Visions series might be difficult since each episode is unique, but I suppose that would be covered by character. (*I perhaps really like the Visions series and am looking for an excuse to try to vid it)

Books
I think book series should be categorized by either and individual book/series or by something like:
- Legends EU
- Disney EU
- The High Republic Era

Games
I think it's pretty common to see Jedi Fallen Order and Jedi Survivor combined and think that's logical.

I'm sure I'm forgetting something, but think that's it for now. ;)

Re: Star Wars
I agree that Ahsoka would be best broken out and J:FO and J:S combined. I see the logic in breaking out the High Republic Era from the rest of the Disney EU and will do it unless someone objects – what fandom tag would you like for it? Star Wars: High Republic Era?

WRT Visions, I am down for lumping it in as one fandom. The only potential issue would be with worldbuilding tags, but as long as people mention which episode they are referring to, this should not be a problem.

That sounds fine to me. Thank you!

Star Trek
Last year the split was

Star Trek: The Original Series
Star Trek: The Next Generation
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Star Trek: Voyager
Star Trek: Enterprise
Star Trek: Discovery
Star Trek: Alternate Original Series
Star Trek: Picard
Star Trek: Lower Decks
Star Trek: Progidy
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Star Trek Crossovers (for e.g. T'Pol (Enterprise)/Worf (TNG))

+ books by storyline (so e.g. the Rihannsu books would go under one fandom category), with standalones nominated on their own. As for franchise-internal crossovers, they'd be under the generic Crossover Fandom if none of the series fits. (If Crossover Fandom gets a huge slew of Star Trek internal crossovers, I'll ask the community about shifting those to a new Star Trek Crossovers fandom.)

Re: Star Trek
I definitely like the Star Trek crossovers idea (if only because it gives more slots for crossovers).

Otherwise, I think how it's split is pretty solid.

For books, I'd like to be able to nominate Vulcan Academy Murders/IDIC epidemic as one, since they are a storyline. I think we have in the past but I can't find it.

Re: Star Trek
Noted! I've added a Star Trek Crossovers fandom to the tag set.

If the books are in one storyline, then you can of course nominate them as one fandom.

Re: Star Trek
If we would like to request an alternate timeline version of a character who only showed up in a specific episode, should we nominate the character as Character: [episode name]![name of character] ST: [name of show]? Or should we just nominate them as Character: [name of character] ST: [name of show] and then just specify further in the additional details?

Re: Star Trek
Would Character: Alternate Timeline [name] (ST:__) be specific enough, or has this character received multiple alternate timeline versions?

Re: Star Trek
The character has received multiple alternate timelines, all within the same show.

Re: Star Trek
Do the timelines have names/can the timelines be given clear names to distinguish them? In that case, use the timeline name. Otherwise, perhaps Character: s1e03 Alternate Timeline [name] (ST:__) (But replace s1e03 with whatever the episode is.)

How should these be abbreviated? And should one use abbreviations every time or only when it is needed for clarity? (Asking specifically for the Star Trek fandoms, but the question applies for both.)

Thank you!

If you mean disambiguating (adding the fandom name at the end of the tag in parentheses), then you need to do it always for every tag. AO3 has a bad habit of occasionally severing tags from their fandoms, and with (Fandom) tacked on at the end, I can re-attach it without having to ask the comm "uhh whose fandom is missing a Worldbuilding: Starship Propulsion?"

Abbreviations of the fandom name, if clear, are completely fine. You can check the tag set to see if someone else has already nominated something for the fandom and use the same disambiguation as they do.

And the information I needed!

Thank you most kindly!

I have a question about the Predator franchise. I could just nominate one film, say Prey, but what I'm interested in is a worldbuilding tag that lets people explore the Predator biology and culture based on the series of films as a whole.

So would I tag that as Predator Crossover? Predator Franchise? Predator Movies? Something else?

Eg.

Fandom: Predator Movie Crossovers
Worldbuilding: Predator biology and culture

Predator Movies (1987-2022), perhaps? (AO3 already has a canonical called Predator Original Series (1987-1990), so I'm patterning it after that.) And the disambig could be (Predator movies).
